Speedo problem on VW Polo

Just bought a VW Polo 1995'N' as a run-around - only problem with it is the speedo doesnt work. does anyone have any experience of these? or know of a VW Forum as good as Mig??

The plug for the speedo will have come off/been disconnected at the back of the dash..

hopefully will be as simple as that - revs, temp and fuel all work fine tho, so dunno!

You'll also notice that the mileage isn't working either (usually why people disconnect the lead/plug )

indeed its not - however the speedo does sometimes flick on, so probably a loose connection somewhere rather than a deliberate removal

Speedo's are electronic on them so if everything else is working on the dash pod it won't be a problem on that. Try the gearbox connector sometimes the clip can break and they come loose, would also explain the flickering...

so will it be a wire as opposed to a mechanical cable??

more than likely. remove at gearbox, & clean up. make sure its tight too.

It should be a 2-pin connector on the top of the gearbox. don't think there are anymore unless its an auto. Give the plug a clean, check terminals etc, should be ok then.

quick shoogle of the offending connector on the g'box and problem solved - going to pull it off and give it a squirt with some WD40 over the weekend tho. think i might become an auto electritian! piece of pi55!

I can't remember what withthis being 6 years ago but it must have been pretty obvious if I managed to find it!!
