Sorry for hijacking this thread but I was thinking about this on the astra, it takes AGES to heat up and even then the center ones blow cool, the temp guage isn't working on the clocks either so I thought I'd best ask here, what are the most likely causes and fixes?
The engine cooling fan still comes on (did the other night) and the guage hasn't worked since I got it if that helps.

A flash should sort the problem most of the times. The problem with the CAV is that the heater matrix is connected to the engine cooling system in parallel. A slight blockage in the matrix will cause the coolant to circulate through the main circuit and very little will go through the matrix circuit.
I fixed my heater matrix problem a couple of weeks ago with a flash. Very easy to do. Disconnect one of the matrix hoses from the main circuit near the engine. Preferrably the one with the best access. The pipe size is just the right size to fit the end of a hose pipe. Turn the water on for 1 mininute. This will take out all the crap from the heater matrix. Refill with coolant/antifreeze.
There's plenty of water in there, made sure of that. The temp guage worked the other night when I had it idling in macdonalds for a while, other than that it never moves.
I know it's not the guage on the clocks thats broke because it didn't work on an old set either.
