Code 13 : Oxygen sensor - open circuit

    On a C18XE..
Is this more likely to be a knack'd cat or O2 sensor?

Code 13 on the LET is Lambda sensor, dunno if its the same on yours...

My first thought was lambda, but I've had the voltage high/low code, never this one.
    Haven't a clue what's in there tbh...

The reason I asked is because Kirsty thinks she can hear a noise from the cat (that 'fizzing' you get when the internals start to collapse, she says)..

and how exactly would the lambda sensor which detects oxygen in the exhaust manifold tell if the cat is ready to die? (especially when the cat is downsteam of the sensor)

thats like your engine ecu telling you uve got a bald tire

running with lambda open circuit will however make the engine run a bit richer than normal and this extra fuel will usually burn off inside the cat causing it to heat up and eventually (ie enough fuel) it will overheat and die

i doubt yours has got this far if the lights only been on a few days

and open circuit usually means a wiring fault so check the continuity of the wiring before touching the sensor

That's not exactly what I meant......
I'm fully aware that the ecu cannot detect a fubar cat, but codes don't always identify a specific, single issue...

We've had the eml coming up intermittently for a couple of months.

Ive got the same code comein up,,mines had a new lambda sensor on at some stage got wires electrical taped together 2ft up from the sensor itself,,,so do i need to change it (knackered) or does it have to be soldered together with it sayin open circuit?????

It's quite common for O2 sensor wires to be cut and joined when fitting a new one (I prefer to change the whole thing)...Given the comments up there ^^ I would check the condition of the join.... maybe solder the wires if possible?

i buahgt a universal sensor when mine went and it came with bare wires an 3 butt connectors in the box so thats prolly what the tape is

if its been coming on intermittantly it could just be a duff sensor - 13 can actually mean any of open circuit, short circuit and out of range(or not moving) readings as far as i can tell as theres only one code relating to the lambda sensor

13 Oxygen sensor - open circuit
38 Oxygen circuit - voltage low (weak)
39 Oxygen circuit - voltage high (rich)

Slightly different for the XEV iirc.

As for cost..... I think car specific ones are about £80 depending on where you get them from.
We got one for the Senator from an online shop for a tad over £80...
