I was on my way home before and my astra cut out and now won't start. I had to get towed home. Not got time to look at it today but will try and get it sorted tomorrow.
Anyone got any ideas what the problem could be? What should I check first? I know it has fuel cos I can smell it when I turn it over..
It's an astra GTE 1.8 8v.

Yeah just coming round a round about and it died! As if someone had switch the ignition off! I wasn't flooring it just driving normally! Had a quick look and all ignition parts are connected!
Never had a problem till now, very strange!
Is the battery secure, sounds like something could have moved/slid?
Yeah the battery is secure. I just had a look on the link you posted. Might sound stupid but does my Astra have a plug like this? It's a 1986 D reg 1.8 8v.
Think so. Looking at engine from front of car, look at the back right hand corner, next to the ron plug.
It hasn't got a ron plug!
It was before they came in!
Is there not a 10 pin plug there somewhere?

coil? rotor arm? distributor cap? not sure what system these engines use tbh.

Yeah it's definately spark ignition.
does it turn over?
does it sound like there is compression on cranking?

Been away for a couple of days so i haven't had chance to look at it yet. Rotor arm and dizzy cap are fine, i'm sure there is compression so I am reckoning it's the coil.
Problem is I have no one to check for spark while I turn it over. Everyones at work. I get some help and I will post the result cos someone may have the same problem in the future.
id bet, that its an earth strap somewhere, and good odds of it being the gearbox one.

My nova did that a while back! Don't think it has an earth strap on the gearbox on this engine, it's near the battery. I will check however, you never know!
Right, I have checked all wiring that I can get to. I have checked and there is no spark coming from the king lead from the coil. I also noticed that the coil is very hot. Is this right?
Should the coil get hot without the car running?
Come on guys I'm desperate, I need to try and get it fixed asap! Any help would be appreciated!
