    Screen constantly steaming up

My windshield is constantly steaming up and it doesnt seem to get cleared very well by the fan, i had a play under the bonnet prior to this and removed the filter where the scuttle panel is and then just put it back as i was looking around

this was full of crud and i will be replacing this but could this be caused by anything else as this wasnt happening before and all i did was literally lift the filter up look inside and then replaced it

if the filter got wet or damp it would be really bad! i forgot to out the plastic cover under the scuttle and over the filter, which meant the water from the screen and scuttle would run straight into the filter.

Could be the heater matrix that's sprung a small leak. I had a problem the other day with my Cavalier. Windows would steam up badly as if the matrix had got damp. But after a day of driving it, it cleared up and has been fine ever since. I guess it must have been the really wet weather we had last week. Water got in somewhere.

i thought that stops all the crud falling in (to what is down that hole lol)

i put the plastic cover on properly as it seemed to be loose, made things slightly better but still not solved the problem

This is a good idea to test the fault. A blocked pollen filter stops air from being brought into the cabin from outside - and they can get almost totally blocked!. The result is that the fan can't move air around the cabin effectively and it ends up slowly recirculating the humid air that you are breathing out (hence the misting of the windows, especially when the outside temperature drops). If taking the pollen filter out cures the problem, get a new one fitted and I'm fairly sure the problem will go away. If you don't fit one you could end up damaging the fan if something big like a pedestrian gets sucked in!

I disagree with both of your statements.

The windows steam up as the fan is pushing damp air around the cabin, ot beacuse the filter is blocked, other wise no air'd be coming out of the vents at all if on 'fresh'.

Secondly, car heaters have worked fine with no 'filtering' at all and not sucked up people or small animals yet, the scuttle panel filters most small creatures out successfully.

By all mean stick another one in, but running without one won't do any damage and makes the forced air a lot more powerful for faster screnn cleaning. I left mine out for ages and only fitted a new filter to see if it helped with hayfever. It didn't.

    Cars you won't like
I only noticed when fitting my alarm, that the pollen filter seems to have been missing from my car since I got it.... good thing really, I need all the increased airflow I can get, as the enclosure that holds the heater matrix is cracked, as the new matrix I got was a few mm too big :\

Could well be, but if it worsens you'll certainly know about it. Mine blew while driving along, and within seconds the whole inside of the car was filled with steam... windscreen a blanket of white.... I was driving hanging out the window like Ace Ventura just to get pulled over

You'll hear the pishy gurgling noise it makes too, and say 'ahaa THATS why I could have sworn I smelt coolant earlier !'

We used to get a lot of Astra-F's in with water ingress/misting up problems.

They are normally ALWAYS due to the rubber trunk thingy (that drains the scuttle/pollen filter area down the bulkhead) being blocked. Then the rainwater can't go anywhere but in through the heater, past the pollen filter. It then sits in the tray under the matrix and steams up the car when you put on the blower.

I wouldn't advise laeving out the pollen filter itself TBH. There's not much point anyway and it acts as a line of defence for the fan blades (which don't 'alf spin quickly on setting 4).

If it wasn't a blocked scuttle, it used to be the panels directly under the windcreen. They have to sit flat and many are now starting to lift due to sun etc.

The Astra 3 has a bit of a rubbish setup in this area TBH and it's all a bit feeble really. But, as long as the panels are all in place properly, seal and fit right and the drain-off hose isn't blocked, you should be fine.

Tell me about it m8, my heater matrix is still bust. Trying to get a new one. I have coolant coming out the footwell and the floor is soaking. I cant put on the hot air cause it just blows hot anti-freeze everwhere. Cant see a thing, its a nightmare.

Has anyone got a Heater MAtrix for sale.
