Hi. Not so long ago I was removing my Cav's CD player when the bare core of the yellow stereo lead touched the casing of the stereo and all went dead. I thought I'd checked the fuses, so took the dash apart (well, centre part) hoping I might be able to find fused wires or something. As it happens I was being stupid and it was in fact a fuse that had blown. I changed the fuse, and today started putting the dash back together.
Now everything is back together, I connected the stereo back in, and tried to turn it on. It made a whirring, like it does when it is plugged in for the first time, then nothing. I turned the key to position II and noticed that the red alternator light was illuminated, and that the handbrake light was very dimly illuminated. I tried running the engine, and it started fine, but the battery light stayed on. I thought this might be to do with the fact I had the key in position II about half an hour beforehand so I could run the fans in the car for twenty mins or so.
I let the car run for ten mins, and took it round the block. Everything worked fine. Even when all the headlights and foglights were on, the engine was working fine, and the lights didn't get dim or anything.
Just now I turned on the rear windscreen heater as the engine was running, and the rev counter dropped straight to zero. The engine was still running as normal, but the rev counter stopped working. The little yellow light in the heater switch itself didn't light up. I pressed the switch again to turn off the heater, and after a second the rev counter started working normally again.
About 3 months ago the car had a new battery and new alternator. When the engine is off I read about 12.9V across the battery terminals, and when it's running I read about 14.8V or so.
I'm getting so sick of stupid problems with this car. Any help is most appreciated.
