need advice: place to sleep in london?

I won two eurostar tickets to London.
I'll be visiting London most likely on december 8th and 9th.
Will be travelling using mostly the underground and by foot, will be exploring London city and anything that can be reached by foot, cab or the underground.

Anyone knows a hotel or bed and breakfast that isn't "tourist expensive" and still offers a nice experience? No Formula 1 (or UK-equivalent highway) motels please - I'm taking misses nero along...
Also, what to see? Last time I went there, I walked the thames in the city center for the most of 2 miles I'd say, which was a nice walk but I'm sure there must be other things to visit...

edit: just checked google maps: I went along the thames from Victoria underground station to Tower bridge and back on the other side.
also did Picadilly circus, so I guess the typical "tourist" things to visit.
Any pointers or places to go and see? oh, and some nice pubs?
Note: the above may or may not be entirely correct.
I wondered why the frisbee was getting bigger, and then it struck me.

If you want to see something new, then I reccomend Stratford city in East London, where not only do you get to see the Biggest shopping centre in whole of Europe! It is located within 15 minutes from St Pancaras Euro star terminal, it has excellent underground links as central and jubilee lines pass through it. Loads of buses going in every direction. It is the Centre of the Earth! Its the king pin!! (lol)

There are a lot of cheap accomodation around this area without paying arm and leg like you would if you stayed in West End, or other parts of London, and easy to get to West End, typical hotel accomodation should cost around £35 per person bed & breakfast, some good holiday Inns around, price would vary, there are some cheaper Bed and Breakfast for about £25.00 per person, just explore on internet, around Stratford City E15, good bus routes, There is a hotel or an Inn within the Westfields shopping centre itself. Obviously you get what you pay for. There are some high standard accomodations too being built and some are already completed for time for Olymphics.

Loads of places to eat at, many pubs around but obviously all the fun ones are in the West End.

    Stratford International Station

http://www.premierinn.com/en/hotel/L...ndon-stratford (Premier inn within Westfields centre quite pricey during weekdays but cheaper on weekends) Nearby B&B are cheaper but the standard of cleanliness may not appeal to you.

This one is walking distance away and is fairly cheap at £55.00 per night for two sharing a twin room)http://www.newhamhotel.co.uk/rooms_rates.html

I stayed in Travel Lodge in Farringdon last time, it was 'expensive' (180 quid for two people/two nights) because it was peak time, but you can get rooms for 30 quid in those places.
You don't need to drive as the Underground will get you anywhere you want, but driving around London at night is pretty good.

Premier Inn have a hotel in part of the County Hall building. Right on the Thames next to the London Eye. Basic but quite reasonably priced for the location.

Premier Inn's is where its at! I've stayed in a few and are very good and have competitive prices. Go for Premier Inn, they do nice breakfasts all you can eat for £7.99 or what ever it is nowadays.

Seconded. Stayed there a couple of years ago. Nice noodle bar opposite the way too.

MSG, thx for the tips, will certainly check those out. Sounds interesting!

Will see for the Premier Inn, that might just be what I need: right on the Thames (romantic!) and reasonably priced (gotta pay the bills!).

    Thanks for the suggestions...

If MSG ever tries to run for president (or Queen of England), he's got my vote!

Due to circumstances at work, I couldn't go in december but it was no(t much) problem rebooking for this weekend.
Stayed at the Premier Inn in County Hall, went to Stratford for most of the day, visited Soho and surroundings for drinks and supper, had brekkie and walked at the queen's walkway (next to the Thames), used lots of Undergrounds (which is truely a remarkable method of transportation, it has got to be said!), went for a ride in the London Eye,...
All in all we had a nice weekend. Nice wheather as well. Will do that again.

I stay in Premier Inns all over the country with work. They're great IMHO. All consistent; you know what you're getting with a Premier Inn. They usually are twinned with a TGI Friday, or Beefeater sort of thing (perhaps not in central London) so you can eat well.

Travel Lodges are cheaper, and not as nice, and are usually twinned with a Little Chef (i.e. crap and a rip off).

Glad you had a fantastic time in London, I too went to see the Westfield properly and spend a whole day there, as I had a brother over from America and so it was a good opportunity to show him around something new, we also had a fantastic time in there, restaurants were very expensive, I took to Jirraf but would not reccomend such crappy food for which i paid almost £50 for 3 dishes. I also visted a casino in there for the very first tiome in my life and won £2.50! big deal! but still won!!

Took loads of pics, and due to christmas period the liveliness was extraordinary, I went in my car and had it parked there for over 10 hours and it cost £10.00 as the first two hours are free.

Still no regrets as i spent over £200.00 in some shopping, eating out, etc. I stll haven't been on the London eye.

Yeah, London is pretty good for visiting! Tube system is good as well. Weekend and after 6pm is free congestion zone. I might go down during the Olympics.

Re: need advice: place to sleep in london?

Aparently not quite true, you have been mislead by gutter news papers who like to spread false propaganda against thousands of hard working immigrants who are quite important to running the streets of London and someone has to do the dirty work, if it was not for thousands of East European Skilled workers we would be facing crises with our Olymphics not being ready on time, more than 50% are from East Europe who are working on the site, there is no way it wpould have progressed that rapidly. No unless you are proved to be a true asylum seeker, from a war torn country, no council in Britain is obliged to provide free shelter. Most of these war torn countries have a British hand in their political turnmoil, recent events in Lybia, Syria, Egypth, leaving Iran and Iraq and Afganistan alone, get ready to provide some free accomodation as we continue to interfere in these countries politics.

Wowzers again! Another post that wasn't aimed at you.

My post was intended to be me trying to convey that I was surprised that nobody had said that, hence a lmao smiley as the tongue in cheek smiley isn't working

The only free accomodation I provide is to my cat!
