Interesting things to find/do whilst at work.

I was testing some welds at a big fabrication company today, so thought I'd share what I found on inspection!

    Some absolutely savage plate defect,

10 meter long support beam with these plate defects running 1 end to the other,

Support beams for a crane that is going to be used at Sellafield. (full of laminations)

Obviously I can't say who or where but this is what happens when you buy Chinese metal!

Mag mate, you can just see the poles in the top pic. It was 16mm thick and they wanted to request an ultrasonics test! UT wouldn't of been any better and they had already welded straight over the defect. You can't see it by naked eye and they were shocked When I stuck the magnet on! I was a bit too to be honest! Shame really because the welding was spot on.

    Ah yeh, just downloaded pics

Used to have my level 1 in most things NDT wise when I worked for a company in the
    Midlands who trained NDT staff.

    Intresting really.

Ultrasonics confused the crap out of me for ages though to be honest!

The magnet is drawing the black fluid into those cracks mate, I'll not go into detail on how but those cracks are invisible to the eye. Not what you want on a Monday!

We found some Family Fortunes cards at work so started playing that the other week.

When I was asked to name something found in a babies bedroom and was told that the top answers of a cott and nappies were gone, I went for 'Paedophiles'. Apparently that's a sick answer. Sick as in not nice, not sick as in awesome if you are down with the kids...

Not really anything that's happened recently but here are a few pics I took from back in my E.O.D days when we did a demo for Cambridgeshire police. I was tasked with blowing this car up. The car was seized from an un-insured driver, they wouldn't let me take the battery or even the CAT for scrap! Tight Twats!

This is basically how the car started...

VW engines are good but certainly NOT bomb proof! That's about 100g of plastic explosive.

    After the blast..

I was only supposed to deny the vehicle by blowing the wheel and suspension arm off but had enough spare to make sure it wouldnt run again!

The wing on the hillside was collateral from the engine blast. Pretty powerful stuff. There's plenty of homemade substances that can achieve similar effects. TATP is the most common, tri- acetone, tri- peroxide. (bleach and fertilizer mixed proportionately).

I used to love going for a dump in company time. We had a newly built building and the toilet was pristine.
Used the ladies mostly as there were no women in our building. I blocked it a few times as well. I think the size of the piping was inadequate.

I used to work for a woman's magazine, and after the handyman/janitor retired, we found an old room at the back of the building with a comfy chair, electric heater, fold-out bed, drinks cabinet and other luxuries - he'd set up a proper full-scale pad where he could skive off. It's probably still there.
One dog goes one way and the other goes the other.
And this guy's saying, "Whaddya want from me?"

Re: Interesting things to find/do whilst at work.

I remember when I was at BAE and I had a few occasions of falling asleep on the crapper when I had a minging hangover on a Friday morning.

I used to go out every Thursday drink about 8 pints of snakebite (about all I could handle when I was 18!) and wake up feeling minging the next day. Stagger out to get my lift to work. Start my shift and decide that I needed to spray some liquid lager poo down the porcelain throne and go upstairs to the loo. The number of times I woke up whilst sat on the bogs with my pants round my ankles was a joke.

    I don't miss those 7:30 starts, that's for sure.
