You only have to do a very few things right in your life so long as you don't do too many things wrong.
Warren Buffett.
I am 65 so where you are starting your working life I am heading towards the end of mine. For the last 20 or so years I have been an employer and there are three things I look for in a potential employee:
- do they have the knowledge to do the job and if not could they learn it quickly
- will they fit in with the existing workforce and work hard
- do they have initiative?
It is the last that is really important in getting on in life. You can be excellent at the first two points but the third is the real killer. The phrases any good boss really wants to hear are 'I've finished that, what do I do now?' or 'I've finished that shall I do this now?' or 'Can I do that for you?'. I think you will get what I am saying.
By the sound of it you are well motivated and learn quickly, possibly more quickly than the others on the course. This may leave you with spare time. If it does do not waste it. See if the is anything extra you can fit into the time while you are there. If it is a Mechanics course see if you can add in some bodywork and welding. If they are already in it and there is no option with that what else is there? For example, you express yourself well but your written English could do with a bit of improvement, punctuation for example, is that an option?
I have a mate who is a teacher at the Land Rover apprentice school and he is appalled at the standard of the students that are turning up. Someone like you who is motivated and capable would make his day. Your lecturer could feel the same way. Treat the time at college as learning not only the mechanics side but how to get the most out of the people you are working for, that's the initiative side![]()
Unfortunately, most HR/Personnel/Recruitment managers are so inept at their job, they filter out the wrong candidates. My last 'team leader' was shockingly bad at his job, but had five years over me and a title to his name and walked straight into any job. It's a shame future employers don't see the part where you had to work 72 hours over the weekend because your team leader messed up (and stayed at home because he had a wife). Commitment and initiative means nothing in the bulk of today's job market, I feel ridiculous trying to prove I have that now.
I've worked with people who constantly complained about their job - just shut up and do your work.
One dog goes one way and the other goes the other.
And this guy's saying, "Whaddya want from me?"
They're there, in their room.
Good luck with the collage.
Yeah "motor vehicle with art NVQ"; it's proving a very popular new course.
There's only one Andy Morrell, only one Andy Morrell. With a packet of sweets and a cheeky smile, Morell is a paedophile.
....and dry pasta and lentils
