the mayans didn't predict it, their calendar only goes that far because of the base system they used, it then resets to the next phase and starts again. doesn't necessarily mean they expected anything to happen, it's like saying Sunday is the end of the world - it's not, it's just the end of the week, we reset and have another one on Monday lmao

it's very unlikely the world will end in an apocalypse stylee, although it is definitely possible. A **** off asteroid would do it, or a supervolcano. It won't exterminate everything but it would definitely destroy civilization as we know it. Few thousand to one of it happening in our lifetimes though.

More likely, and looking possible, is a pretty drastic shift in society. If we have reached peak oil (which is also likely) then things are going to get very bad before they get better, get used to years and years of recession, a massively widening gap between rich and poor, a lot more rioting... Wages are rising like nobody's business in China so that's pushing inflation hard, energy going up, food going up, economy faltering, more unemployment, 170bn a year deficit building, America's economy imploding.

This period in time is likely to have a name in history books lol.
