    Biking to keep fit

I do a lot of walking, but find it doesn't really get you as worn out as cycling.
I used to run years ago, but I found it shags your knees and it's horrible. I now walk about 5 - 7 miles everynight (or every other night) in the summer, and have been cycling in the day (about the same distance and usually a bit more). Cycling really wears you out over the same distance.
Is this a good way of losing a bit of flab as I've gained a gut and I swore I'd never get one. I've always been edging toward gut-dom, but I'm sick of it!
Should I be doing more or another regime? I don't drink and I'm a veggie, but most of the veggie stuff is worse than meat for fat.
I hate running and general gym work as it's zero fun, at least with biking or walking you get some scenery.

You live on the Wirral so it's pretty easy:
Get yourself a track suit, stand somewhere near a pensioner until you see a police car, push said pensioner about a bit then shout' ****in hell laa, it's da bizzies' and see how far you can get before they catch you up.

"Look at this clown in his shellsuit. His running is no match for Dazza and Tomo in their Impreza though, and he's apprehended, and is then called 'mate' a few times by the dudes in blue. What a muppet." -Police Interceptors, ITV6.

I need to adjust the gears as it jumps out now and then. I've nearly gone over the handlebars a couple of times. No brakes as well, I've worn down the friction material to the metal.
I just hate running, I hate running on grass and sand even more as it's doubles the work!

You live on the Wirral iirc, so it's pretty easy: Go out to your car tomorrow morning, jack it up, remove the bricks then simply extend the axles through your cycles wheels, prop them up on said bricks and stay in the safety of your own rear garden. That way if you're crafty you can have it facing the bedroom window of that bird opposite who's husband is in Walton for not having a Mondeo with sellotaped bumpers.
Once she sees a bloke on a cycle working up some sweat she'll think all of her birthdays have come at once and you'll be banging like a shed door in the wind. Just remember to occasionally wink at her and perhaps swap some of the Tenant's Wifebeater cans in your back yard for Lucozade Isotonic ones instead. That way she'll think you're a proper fitness freak and she'll be fizzing at the bunghole before you know it.

that's the idea lol. you work harder so get more done in less, and because it's soft you still have knees at the end of it.

cycling's nice for relaxing though but you'll have to go miles and miles to match running... something like 10x the distance!

The Wirral isn't that bad, as long as everyone's got their methadone, it can be a pretty chilled out place!

I beg to differ, it just feels like a workout after an hour on a bike, esp with a bit of variety in gradients, etc.

OK, here is an excerpt from my Endomondo logs...

3.42 miles 'transport' cycling = 108 calories burned
    2.24 miles walking = 202 calories burned

    Re: Biking to keep fit

A mate of mine does a fair bit cyling, he does "a little alot and alot a little" so will go out an do 5 - 10 miles of really tough stuff on a regular basis, climbs, tracks and so one to build up the muscles and then maybe once a week will do a good long 30 mile run to build up stamina. Granted it doesn't really burn fat as cycling only works certain muscle groups so it won;t do a huge ammount for the gut, but mixed in with some others excercises... it's a decent way of keeping fit. Plus, running can be really hard on the ankles, knees and back if you're of erm, heavier build where as cyling means you can rack up plenty miles without hammering your joints.

I'm talking about calories burnt over a time period. I doubt I'd ever walk 15 miles, but would happily do it on bike.

What about swimming? If you are a veggie (this should be in the swear filter) what about growing your own veg, you'll be surprised how much of a sweat you can get on with gardening.

I know it's going off on a tangent somewhat like but thought I would lob it into the mix...

I'm not that great a swimmer to be honest! I used to do a load of gardening when I had a garden.

I like p0rn as much as the next person Wayne but it's not appropriate for the forum. I'm sure you are aware of that it's not appropriate, so please don't take the piss.

Nonsense which is commonly believed sadly.

You can't "spot reduce" fat. A gut is simply a store of fat (calories). You do any activity that burns calories, and as long as you are in a calorie defecit you will start to burn the fat stores on your body, regardless of where they are and what body part you are working.

Your genetics determine where fat is first added to your body, and where it first burns off from. You cannot control where your fat deposits will first be burned from, you can only influence the amount (i.e. how many calories you burn).

    ^ this

I get really annoyed with this one - it seems to always be girls who say "I'll exercise my arse to make it smaller". Well, if you're not burning more calories than you're taking in, exercising your arse will make it bigger as you build muscle there lmao

    Re: Biking to keep fit

Yeah it's the same mentality with situps too. People with a big fat gut think "if I do a load of sit ups every night, I'll lose my fat belly".......situps are a waste of time for losing a belly, they barely burn any calories! You want to burn calories to lose a belly, and there are FAR more efficient ways of burning calories than doing situps; running will burn the most calories per hour than any other exercise.

I don't know how fast you walk, or if you have one leg, but if I walk 1 mile compared to cycle one mile I've covered the distance on bike in probably a 1/10 of the time, and by the end of it I'm starting to get out of breath. I'm not interested in muscle gain or getting too much into the technicalities, but I would've thought being out of breathe and building up a sweat is far better than not.

    Also, missed the porn.

I was told by a mate that people with man-breasts should do those curls as you can feel the muscle behind the man-breast tensing. I always knew fat was a store and doesn't matter where it comes from - otherwise you'd see runners with skinny legs and fat bodies eh?

Fartlek is very effective. We used to hammer this in rugby training, builds aerobic and anaerobic fitness, (i.e. gets you so you can do low intensity for ages and still be able to go mad when required). Plus it's a funny word.

You can do it with loads of exercises, doesn't have to be running. We used to run along the prom road that was about 5 miles with streetlights and a big bank next to it - you can jog then sprint alternating between posts, then when you think you can't sprint anymore, sprint up the big bank. Proper ****s you up but by god I was ridiculously fit.

I did that 'Fartlek' thing, but didn't know it had a name. The lad I did it with was a complete maniac with an infinite amount of energy and motivation - gym in morning, porridge (with raisins) for breakfast and baked beans and some random Mtrx for dinner, gym in afternoon, then Jiu-Jitsu and grapple training in evening, then run at night. Argh! I worked with him so there was no escape.
How long did you do that for?
