New speed cameras

found this on an audi forum don't know wether you guys have seen it or not.

Quote:
Speed cameras which can track drivers for up to 30 miles are to be deployed on roads next year.

---

Trials of the new speed cameras have been concluded successfully in London.

The device is to stop motorists dodging tickets by braking suddenly before a camera and speeding up immediately afterwards.

The cameras will work together in a network, and can be positioned more than 15 miles apart, automatically reading numberplates and transmit data instantly to a penalty processing centre.
Existing average-speed cameras can only cover a maximum of six miles, and are costly and difficult to set up as they have to be connected directly by a cable.

Trials of the new cameras have been concluded successfully in London and a second set of trials are set to finish in Northern Ireland.
The Home Office is expected to approve the technology by the end of January and the first fines are likely to be issued next summer.

Transport minister Jim Fitzpatrick told a road safety conference on Wednesday that the latest cameras would be key in reducing road casualties.

He said: "When the Home Office approves the equipment, I think there will be great interest among the safety-camera partnerships. They will give a more sophisticated edge to cameras than the blunt instrument we have at the moment."

He added: "Trials have shown very good results. Wherever there are average speed camera signs, traffic moves at a uniform speed and crashes reduce."

On the M1 the number of casualties halved after average-speed cameras were introduced on a contraflow between junctions 6a and 10.

The new cameras, known as Specs3, will cost typically £300,000 per network and are likely to be deployed first on long rural A roads, where crashes occur frequently.

Brian Gregory, from the Association of British Drivers, who campaign against speed cameras, said: "People put the car in cruise control and the mind in neutral. It's so boring driving through these sections at a constant slow speed that people are going to drop off."
now does it concern any one else that £300,000 is a lot of money, more than the average family house in britain, especially when this sort of stuff happens to them...

Re: New speed cameras

Of course you could change drivers several times in 30 miles.....

Selective statistics again. When they put the speed limit in in the first place it was 40MPH. When they upped it to 50 and put in additional SPECS cameras the accident rate fell. There was a reason for it. When the drivers were slowing to 40 for ten miles of motorway they started fiddling with phones, sat navs etc. as the speed limit was TOO SLOW.

Re: New speed cameras

kind of a repost and ill say what said then if you have a 30 mile average ok say for instance in brighton anyone who has been there even on a non sunny day will know that you couldnt get throught there at an average of 20mph let alone 30 think about it most areas other than motorways how many time do you get stopped at traffic lights or no fecker will let you out of that junction then imagen what thta actually does to your average speed

then theres these annoying yet 'convincing' stats that the government come out with casualties which can be taken in mayn different lights for examle a 50 year old copper will say a broken arm is a boo boo but some of the more new agey coopers will say a cut on your hand is a major injury

the only way to really assess the effectiveness is the death toll in raod accidents as theres no way you can say someone is dead when they arent although quite badly injured they arnt dead and visa vera which according to jeremy clarkson is exactly the same as it was some 10 years ago or somet

Re: New speed cameras

I'm not sure I understand how this works... They say it's supposed to stop the idea of people slowing down before they hit the camera... then speeding up afterwards, but if they're up to 15 miles apart... how does that make any difference? Wouldn't people still slow down before the camera, speed up after it, then slow down when they reach the next one?

Actually they go by KSIs, or Killed or Seriously Injured. And if you break a bone it is a serious injury, so clip a kerb, steering wheel spins round fast and breaks your little finger, yep, your seriously injured!

it will measure your time between two fixed points. Lets pretend its a 30mph limit for 30 miles. If you do that distance in anything less than ohhh 55Mins (alowing for tollerance) then you will get fisted. Same as the usual specs in road works.

Wonder if they will work on multilane/changed lane instances

You have committed the thought crime of thinking.
Just repeat "speed kills" and then it will all make sense.

If they work on the assumption that speed is what causes all collisions.
