    Annoying Eye Floaters

    http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YcHK9X...eature=related

I was doing some research as I am begining to suffere from some of these alien things landing inside my eye balls! they are like dark shadows and webs like things floating around aimlessly causing not so much interference with your vision but they are bloody anoying. Its like you are wearing dirty glasses.

went to see the expert at the Morefield's Eye Hospital 3 years ago, one of the best in Europe and they said they can do eff all and I will have to live with it and will slowly get used to it, so far thats 3 years gone now and my vision ain't as bad as the one in that video, but even a single speck of web like thing is irritating and quite annoying, I agree with the people's comments and the good thing is there is a treatment called Vitrectomy available, seems like Morefields are behind in medical science. There is a laser surgery available too now and I might be getting that done privately in America.

This is what I see more like, as shown in this second video clip, mind you you have to look very close to see them, so other than that if I am driving or walking etc its giing no problem, but watching anything bright or white walls is when you notice them.

    Re: Annoying Eye Floaters

I have had them for years, when I first got them I freaked out, went to morefields about 3 times. They dialated my pupuls and looked into my eye.. not sign of retinal detachment and all was well. 8 years on and thank god they are still the same, no real increase.

I dont even notice them now, the more you think about them the more they annoy you... just ignore them!

I get them, but they are more like clear blobs instead of black ones.

    Re: Annoying Eye Floaters

Thanks everyone who commented on this condition, mine are getting a bit more nuisance as of lately , they are coming directly in line of my vision and not like being on a side if you know what I mean, and no amount of blinking or shaking will dislodge them to another area, it is quite possible that Morefields may have acquired new lasers to carry out this operation I will enquire with my GP for a referal, see what happens other wise a trip to USA is not a bother for me, there is aDoctor up there who performes a laser surgery to destroy the things but I am a bit sceptical in that the debri will still be inside the eye and may still interfere so Vitrecomy is the best answer though every operation carries a risk.

here is another video clip of a Vitrectomy being carried out. http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4FJYeE...eature=related

    PS

I wear glasses, and my latest pair I got about a year ago may be the cause of the problem in some way as all modern glasses are made of plastic lenses, these if they get scratched can cause eye irritation and I do suffer a lot of eye irritation if my glasses get even a speck of dust or finger prints on them.

I am used to cleaning my glasses about 10 times in a day with fairy liquid and wipe them dry with clean dust free tissues, but these plastic lenses have now acquired a few minor scratches and I am wondering if this is what may be contributing to worstening of my probelm. Yes it is hard to beleie that I start getting irritation just by a dirty lense, my eyes start to water etc. hence I must clean my glasses so many times in a day..

    Re: Annoying Eye Floaters

I discovered that floaters can be augmented by having inappropriate/incorrect focal length which in my case was from excessive wan^W close-up work.

If you think this may be the case, try to avoid close up work for 24hrs (or even not wear glasses for 24hrs) and see if the situation is then improved.

I know the feeling now, this is what is worrying me in case it gets any worst it may effect my driving vision.

    Re: Annoying Eye Floaters

lol at a vitrectomy for floaters. There is no chance they are going to do that mate, certainly not on the NHS. You may be able to find some dodgy doctor in the US to do it privately for about 6k but I can't think of any reputable ophthalmologist that would do it.

Vitrectomy is major eye surgery which is very painful and has a fairly high risk of complication such as macular oedema (swelling of the back of the eye) or even worse endophthalmitis (infection inside the eye) which could blind you completely. I can't imagine laser treatment would work well either unless there is some new procedure I don't know about, and even if there was I would not recommend lasering so close to the retina as if they are a bit out of focus that can do damage as well.

When I get people with sudden onset new floaters in I would dilate them to exclude retinal tears or detachments but if all is well I just tell them to live with it. I have a few as well and they can be slightly annoying but definately not worth risking you sight over.

I wouldn't worry about them getting worse and affecting your driving mate, I have seen people with asteroid hylosis which is a condition where they floaters are so bad it is like a snowstorm inside the eye. I couldn't see much looking in at all, but the patient could still see good enough to meet the driving standard

From your above post, you seem like you are an eye specialist, I take your advice with some heed, obviously any tampering with the eyes could possibly end up with disastrous results, hence I am going to give it a while before re-considering that option, at the moment my problem may be less tolerent due to my plastic lenses having a few scratches on them and perhaphs I need a new pair and possible a new eye test.

    Re: Annoying Eye Floaters

yeah mate, get another eye test and see what is said. I can understand you finding the floaters annoying, you are certainly not alone there. They can be a bit of a pain. However vitrectomy is major eye surgery and should only be done in extreme cases, normally to remove a bleed which has completely opacified the vitreous leaving almost no sight. In that case that is nothing to loose so it is worth giving it a go, however in your case it is just not worth the risk. also there is absulutely no guarantee that a vitrectomy will remove all the floaters and it may even leave you with more.

I am not an eye specialist, just an optician, but we are doing more and more clinical stuff these days, especially up here, and our training covers a lot of the surgical stuff too. I also have a lot of experience with diabetic eye disease which is the most common reason for vitrectomy being carried out.

    Re: Annoying Eye Floaters

Good to know that, Optician amongst us, I normally have to go through an eye examination every year due to my type II Diabetes, and the guy looks into my eye and takes some pictures and when I asked him what is he going to do with my picture he took of the retina and the blood vessles, he said he is going to email the latest images to the local general hospital where all records are kept, I asked him if he could send me an email of my own eye image, and his answer was biggest bull**** I have ever heard in my life.....under the data protection I he cannot send my eye image to anyone other than the hospital, and when I asked him if he can see any eye floaters, he said there aren't many to worry about, but his camera foucusing on the retina means he cannot alter the foucus on the floaters to show me the images on his monitor, although I saw the image of my own eye on his monitor, it looked normal he said with no complications so far.

That is garbage mate, it is true data protection prevents us giving out patient data to 3rd parties, but you most certainly do have a right to view your own records and there should be no problem with sending a fundus photo to you, I have certainly done it before.

mate you should learn to accept it!
i too have these floaters-quack said they are from whense eyes were first formed?

i actually like looking at them-they change formation if you quickly move your eyes side to side lol

My advice is live with it - do you really want some guy messing with your eyes with the potential to bodge it up?

    Re: Annoying Eye Floaters

Thanks for your opinions as well, Station & Spooler , I will try to live up with it, but I am pretty sure that as of lately my floaters have or must have become more noticable for some reason, possibly due to my diabetes or age related condition, I cannot remember if I had that many floaters before and they seems to have developed recently in the last 3 years or so.

Greatly noticable when I am in a bright walled room particulary when the walls are painted in very light color like Magnolia or Brilliant White.
