I have an old book, what to do with it..

Ok so an old guy at the pub i know often brings me in random things, like for instance a lighter in the form of a sparkplug which is ace.

The other day we were talking about books and he said "i have a book at home you can have if you wan't it" not wanting to sound rude i said yeah sure why not i'll give it a read!..

He came back the next day and handed me the book and just said to me,"when you read it remember when it was written,i don't want it back so keep it"

    Well here it is...

    Looks old!

Opening page,i tried to get a picture of the date of publish but i only have my phone camera which wouldnt focus...anywho .. its 1845 so that makes it 163 years old...

    The illustrations are fantastic!

I dont know how to try and keep it in a good condition, it's not brilliant at the moment but i don't want it to get any worse..

You can get dust covers and jackets for them mate. I'd sort those out and keep it warm and dry for now and clean your hands and fingers before flicking through it to try and preserve the pages.
    Cool freebie by the way!

id be putting it in one of those clear plastic envolpe things (the type that seal air tight)

im no expert on old books but from the look of the first page pic the title "punch" seems familier and id imagine the "published on fleet street" line means its a quality book. keep it safe and tidy fella then when antiques road show come to town, get it vallued.

I'd ask that you digitize (scan) the whole volume and make it publicly available (it's copyright has long since reverted to the public domain).

I can help you out with anything along these lines.

I wouldn't pack it in anything air tight, or anything made entirely from plastic.
Simply because if there is ANY moisture inside the book when you pack it, or in the air around it, it could condense and cause degeneration of the book.
I would wrap it in a thick brown paper, sealed with tape, so that any moisture can get out. Thats if you want to preserve it...

Thats what we do with evidence which may be damp anyway.
