    0870 numbers

Guessing it is already known about, but for those who don't. This sit allows you to type the 0870 (or other premium rate phone number in) and get to the correct standard charging number

I use the 0870 site quite a lot - I'm on an all inclusive phone package which exludes 0870/0845 numbers so it saves me some pennies.

0870 isn't "premium" anyway. Its National Rate.

And that site often gives you an alternative number that will send you to the wrong place and you'll end up back at 0870 anyway.

I worked in a call centre before, we had 1 free phone number that was for specific queries only. The amount of folk that called it because of that site and were turned away / transfered to the 0870 number anyway was unbelievable. It was a total waste of everyone's time.

Maybe once upon a time it was but you'll now note that there is no distinction when calling outside your own area code meaning 0870 numbers are more expensive.

I'm pretty sure you're not allowed to call an 0870 number 'national rate' anymore. OFCOM calls it "Special Services: Higher Rate".

"Premium" is surely defined as circa 50p-£1 a min? Last time I checked, 0870 was in the region of 10p/min.

In essence, 0870 is far nearer "National Rate" than "premium rate".

As I said before, there is no 'national rate' as you pay the same to call any geo-number throughout the country.

    Re: 0870 numbers

Well then subsitute "national rate" for the rate you pay to call any UK landline number in what I said then.

It's still far closer to this rate than the "premium" 0891 etc numbers.
