Re: House prices, economy, outlook 2008

had an LOL at this at the weekend, local chap I always speak to down the pub moaning about how hes struggling with the mortgage and its all the govts fault and they should be helping him with his mortgage.

I felt like pointing out it was his descision to pay £200k+ for a semi detached 3-bed ex council house, and I also destinctly remember 2 years ago when he bought the place he was all cocky about how he lied on his self certification mortgage aplication.... but thuoght better of it.

Ironic - being at a pub to drink alcohol rather than stopping at home and saving money. Why the F*k should my taxes help him?

Self Certification? Well there's a problem straight away. No one will abuse that will they?

I had to send in the last 6 months bank statements or wage slips i think (bit hazy) when we applied for a mortgage.

In his defence on that one, he was only out on a Cheddar cricket club end of season bash and wasnt buying his own drinks. Havent seen him in ages.

But no doubt in 99% of cases, you are bang on the money!

Really not liking the look of this

Economy at 60-year low, says Darling. And it will get worse

****ing, bastard, idiot politicians They should be made to pay back all their wages, pension rights and perks over the last 10 years for gross and negligent mis-management!

Paul.

I did have to laugh the other day when Darling announced the economy was facing its worst crises for 60 years.... you're damn right it is, him and Furher Braun!

Time for a what if....

What if the government are taking the opportunity to offer seriously bad predictions for the future which are grossly exaggerated in order they can claim 'look we've saved you from the worlds problems', just in time for the general election?

FWIW I do believe we'll have tough times ahead - to what degree I'm not sure

For your sake and mine I hope your what if is correct. All I know is I see a country falling apart around me, prudence long forgotten, spending they can't keep a lid on, borrowing in a way they've encouraged us all to do, savings squandered and private companys looking to be bailed out after they have made billions already. They preach to us about bingeing, here comes the hangover

Re: House prices, economy, outlook 2008

It's been top notch "car crash tv" for the last few weeks.
Darling seems to be distancing himself from Brown, who will be announcing his masterplan to save himself, I mean the housing market on Tuesday. The treasury apparently loathe the plans that they've been told about so far.

I agree. Also note that the prices in Scotland are still lower than England.
There's a lot of time delays in the market - people wait until they have to sell or grow bored of waiting. That's why the "this is nice area, we won't be affected" argument doesn't really work.

I've been trying to avoid it but keep getting drawn to it like some of that car crash tv! I remember when many people were trying to post warnings of an imminent crash and getting ridiculed and belittled by the people with vested interests and everything being forced into 1 thread

The derided lunatics who talked of price falls got given their own sub forum and it's now full of links to news stories and discussion of what's going to fail next.

Re: House prices, economy, outlook 2008

Spent a while reading a few threads on that money saving expert site Tom linked me too. Might invest siome time reading that site actually.

Anyway, one article I read (Times I think) was saying Brown plans on propping up the market and helping first time buyers into new build houses with 30% govt loans.

Strikes me all this is much like the 50/60's Council housing boom, massive estates, govt tennants.... we all know how well that turned out. Another well thought out step backwards from our govt. Great.

Re: House prices, economy, outlook 2008

I think that social housing has move on quite a bit from then Brett. Shared ownership is very common now and give people a real stake in the property and an incentive to keep it in order. Massive estates and tower blocks are a thing of the past, most new builds are on small brown-field sites that desperately need redevelopment.

But government interference into the housing market is simply a disaster, they can not change the world economic climate.

It wasnt intended as a direct comparison of corse, and I dont for one second envisage them building concrete tower blocks.

New builds round here are all on big towns like Weston, huge green field site rammed full of shonky flats made from poor materials in a month by major companies, they're all lying empty and they've filled the footings in on others they planned to build. From the report I found it sounded like these sort of properties were what the govt had in in mind....

either way, in my eyes its a major step backwards.

Now the government are looking to have a stamp duty "holiday" on property under £175,000 for the next 12 months in order to help buyers.

It'll drag houses currently priced up to £205,000 or thereabouts down to £175,000 in short order.

Re: House prices, economy, outlook 2008

How does that work then? New buyers dont have to find an extra £1750 (satmp duty based on £175,000 property). So a £205,000 automatically looses 30k of its value?

No, I meant that vendors offering houses at up to £205,000 or thereabouts will likely cut their ask price to <£175,000 to secure a sale.
