Exclamation Some MIGWeb feature being removed for a short period.

A link to MIG is being published in a very popular publication any day now (unless there has been a change of plan). Because of this, we will be expecting a massive number of guests on the site for a few days. As such, I will be removing some of the more server intensive features from the site to allow it a better chance to cope with this increased number of users. I apologise for any inconvenience caused by this, but rest assured that these features will only be deactivated temporarily.

I will edit this post once the changes have been made in order to detail which specific features have been turned off or adjusted.

    Many thanks

    Mike

What are the "server intensive features"?

Why will a massive number of guests be using these features?

I don't really understand why the server can't cope with a bit of load, and I don't understand how removing one or two of the server intensive features is going to make a ****'s worth of difference.

To be honest, and this is my personal opinion, I think you spend far too much time pissing around with the settings behind the forum. It's not as if there's a hidden setting somewhere that says MAKE_SQL_CALLS_TAKE_HALF_THE_TIME and magically it makes the forum super quick.

only a guess but i'd say some of the 'extras' have been tacked onto the main vBulletin engine in a rather ineficient manor, causing laughably large overheads for some simple features ?

as jack said, time to stop funking round with the server, cocking it up for the members so that we cant be arsed to come here or realise we are missing features. at the end of the day, im paying for this as the other members are and this is just another reason not to renew membership.

I'd say it's probably even more primitive than that.

How does this sound Mike? Your server is running a 386-optimised, package-based distribution like Red Hat or Debian.

I've got a Linux server in my room, running two 433mhz Celeron CPUs on an Abit BP6.

I put Ubuntu on it earlier. A Debian-derived, 386-optimised distribution, with GNOME as the default window manager. I nearly cried it was so slow.

I've spent the evening installing ArchLinux, a lightweight, 686-optimised distribution that takes a small degree of skill to install, but it's similar in performance to Gentoo and nowhere near the hassle.

It's so much faster that I'm beginning to doubt whether I even had Ubuntu utilising both CPUs.

Messing around with the forum settings will give next to no performance increase, and just serves to piss people off when you mess it up.

i don't strictly agree with that, as each feature could be requiring x amount of processor cycles, memory for variables and possibly extra SQL calls, meaning, getting rid will make server resources go a lot further.

No that it`s owt to do with me but at least Mike warned us/you and gave an explanation as to why he was doing what he had planned before the moaning about "this, that and the other feature is missing, the server is s**t, why is this all so slow" etc etc.

He could have quite easily not said anything, and sat back and watch everyone TRY to post moans/rants/complaints about "the server is busy" etc etc.

As I said, it`s nowt to do with me (I`m a sponger) and I may well be talking rubbish...I definitely don`t know as much about that funny language Jack was speaking earlier, but let`s all just CTFO!!lmao

CTFO = Chill the f**k out!

So, if you're scared half to death twice, does that mean you're dead??

Surely Mike can do as he pleases with his site? As above, at least he has explained the situation.

In the grand scheme of things, the changes Mike will make will make as near as makes no difference no change to the load that the server is under.

Just like putting 20 seconds between searches doesn't either. The server still has to feed you a page to tell you that you need to wait, which loads it up. Instead of just doing the search, it has to feed you the same page saying you can't search four or five times as users get impatient and press search.

I would genuinely love to see some statistics with a wait between searches disabled.

If this was me the first thing I'd be turning off is attachments. No-one seems to use them, and it does nothing but fill up disk space.

Then I'd be going into the server configuration and getting rid of anything it didn't need. It's probably running CUPS for printing and all sorts.

It's a bit like ripping the interior out and spending days finding out which mirrors are the most aerodynamic when you're only making 100bhp.

There are other areas you need to address first. lmao

Guys - I'm takling MASSIVE amounts of guests - possibly many thousands in one go. I will try to bring the features back as soon as it subsides, or if it looks like the server is coping. I'm not talking a few extra people here.

Sod it - how does the front cover of the Sunday Telegraph Motoring section grab you?

I'll be waking up underneath it on a park bench if I carry on spending my hard earned on subs to shonky Vauxhall forums, according to my missus.

It would be an idea, then , at least for the forseeable future for people not to post rubbish up - if you want to make a good impression of the site...
