I wouldnt send anything until the cheque had cleared and funds were present in my account. Even if it was for £5 i wouldnt send item until i had the money in my account.

That doesnt matter, the cheque will be stolen and the issuing bank will take back the funds once they are informed

If the cheque was from a foreign branch of capital one, it can be cancelled anything up to 6 months iirc after being cashed.

Send him the trailer in a year, if the money is still in the account!
