I spend about £50 a week - every 10 days in the Mondeo just going to and from work 10 miles away (very bad traffic and 3 year roadworks)... it's about the standard rate for most people.

Like mudcow said, if it's a problem buy a diesel.... though this doesn't leave you much time if your job is starting soon...

Depends on contract... a friend of mine gets 40p a mile for going to and from work as he is doing a contract job.

It does, if it's not stuck in bad traffic all the time. I got 342 miles out of it last week, just by leaving for work earlier, and staying later, so the traffic had cleared some.
When I do general running about in it at weekends, I can drive for miles and the gauge hardly moves, due to the roads being clear.
I've also adapted an ultra smooth driving style now... I try and anticipate the traffic about half a mile ahead, and plan never to accelerate again

An umbrella company from the likes of crestforce will cost you £20 a week. In usingthem you can claim for £5-£10 a day subsistence and a mileage allowance from your petrol for this distance you travel if the contract is less than 24 months. At £15 an hour it will be borderline but you should be better of like this.

On a self employed contract job you can claim mileage to/from work for the first two years, after that you can't as the IR see anything longer than 2 years as being 'a permanent place of work'.

Mileage rates depend on how many miles you do a year - theres some info here www.warr.co.uk

What you doing to warrant a low rate?

I was getting £80/hr when I was contracting a few years back although I did have a skill that was in short supply so I pretty much fixed my own rate.

If your actually working less than 9.5 hours then you should be being paid on that not on the travel time as basically you get paid minimun wage on the hours you work as a salary and paid the rest via a dividend. the less hours you work the less tax you pay basically.

the subsistence is £5 or £10 /day depending on hours worked. Alternativley if your using a canteen at work and are spending more than this a day on food you keep the receipts and use them instead.

if your working it and have bought a pc recently you should be able to claim that into the expenses as well.
