    A vauxhall mini

Okay, I might be getting a mini if the price is right!

But, I want it to be different from the rest and all I can think of is..... a vauxhall mini.

Please you you all advise me of styling tips to make the classic mini have the vaux look about it!

    Thank you very much

err excuse me, he said he wants it different from everybody elses, so infact keeping a non vauxhall engine would achieve this.

Haha, thanks chris9 for that - great!

Oddball is sorta right - I actually want to keep the engine the same as it is - 998cc because insurance is rediculously cheap - group 2 which means I can run that and my cav v6 still!

I think I'm gonna go the route most astra owners are doing which is making the car as light as possible! I've been told that the mini is about 680kg's and I'm hoping that after stripping some bits from the car I can get it to 650kg or a little less!

It's pretty nippy aparently, it has the metro A+ 998cc engine with big exhasuty thing and cone filter but it peaks out about 60mph! Good for country lanes at least!

I think I better fit a roll cage too - they seem a little flimsy!

    cheers

Hey Stranger. I know this lass who is mini mad. She has just had a conversaion from a 998cc to a 1.3 out of a Metro. Its got that little more power and tunability and it only costs her an extra £50 a year I think.

    Tops out at 60?
Even a standard 998 should hit 80-90mph tops. You might find that the last owner has set the carb to run super-lean in an attemt to get better MPG or to pass an emissions test. Get the mixture and timing checked and it should run a lot better.

    As for weight saving :-

2x cobra seats, a dash, no carpets, no soundproofing(chip all the stuff off the inside of the floorpan too), no spare wheel, no back seat, with a MG metro 1275 engine, RC40 exhaust, K+N filter, adjustable shocks, adjustable ride height, is pretty nippy and handles like a dream.

All mods declared it only costs me about £200 a year to insure it.

    Mini's rule

its not the acceleration on them, its their ability to out corner everything else on the road that makes them quick

The way to dictate the speed/acceleration of a mini is the diff!

    3.44 is standard, 0-60 7-9 sec, about 100mph
    2.96 is for motorways, 0-60 12-14 sec, about 120mph

then you have others with different numbers of teeth, like miglia's etc etc. That is also dependable on the cc, the largest cc you can have on a 1275 mg metro engine is 1430 with offset boring, but that will make a lumpy idle and crap on the road!. If you want to get some ideas about modding mini's look at every David Vizard Book and try and talk to Bill Sollis on a Miglia raceday.
    HTH

PS.... mines a 1293 MG Metro with a semi-race head, formula junior cam, lightened and balanced flywheel, centre main strap, high capacity oil pump, central oil pickup pipe, 3.44 diff, new kyb stiff shocks, new wheels, new brakes, it has been completely stripped down and re-built by me!!!!..

    Anyway

    lmao

mate I know all about David Vizard I worship his books lmao

1430 would enable you to run a wilder cam than a 1275 without shite running and the sorts btw (and give a load more torque)

biggest cc you can get with an A series is actually 1600 !! but the head limits its power at this point

Problem with running 1600 is the gap between cylinders are really thin so the life of the engine is normally shorter.

    Great fun though.

    Vizard is indeed the god!

that is very true (i was in a hurry so forgot to put that) plus the 1600 doesn't offer any sort of advantage over a well set up 1430 as the head becomes the limiting factor and not the displacement.

Yes indeed it would be fun tho (in between breaking down all the time of course lmao )

Hello, thanks for all your replies.

I picked the mini up last night. It was rare to say the least. Firstly the lights wouldn't work but traced that back to a dodgy switch! That'll be sorted.

The drive on the car was soooo wierd. It was hilarious. At about 45mph I was doing nearly 3000 rpm in fourth gear so what does that mean in the long run of the mini - I can't see it getting anywhere near 100mph to be honest! 60mph would be realistic and the car wouldn't blow up! But I'd be doing about 5k rpm I guess!

The engine was from a metro 1.0 car - it's the A+ 44bhp model. Aparently it's faster than a normal 998cc mini off the mark!??!

Brakes aren't especially great on them cars either! I think I'll have to deal with that at some point too.

Any tips, pointers, reasons why the car revv's soo highly would be greatly appreciated!

    cheers

lil 998's love to be revved mate thats how you get them to produce any sort of power - the mini se7ens rev to 8500 - 9500rpm and produce about 90 - 100 bhp

So what you reckon is a safe limit to revv that little engine to???? 6000rpm?

I don't wanna stress it out tooo much and pop water pumps etc - a sort of medium between the two would be cool!

    Let me know!
    cheers

yeah about 6000 totally standard although most of the power will have dropped away by that point so might be a bit of a pointless exercise - crap cylinder head design, valve bounce will determine in the end where it'll rev too particularly on the 850's lol (i know urs is a 998).

Okay, so going through the gears probably less than 6k would be better but as for top speed it would comfortably revv at 5k?
