Sump torque settings

In true typical Ed style, a straight forward simple job goes completely tits up!

After changing my sump gaskett, I go to torque up the sump bolts at 15Nm (Haynes). Torque wrench is set at 15Nm and does up the first 2 bolts fine, but the third one cracks the sump!

Is the torque definitely 15Nm?

Anyway I also need a new sump now if anyone can help out?

Ouch.
Are you sure everything was positioned properly and all the holes lined up?
Then did you screw everything progressively by hand following a pattern? (like a cyl head sequence)
You have to do them all hand-tight, then (say) 7Nm, then 10Nm, then 15Nm, then again 15Nm (you'd be surprised how many feel 'loose' second time round) then 15Nm just in case.
Job done.
You should also use threadlock, so the whole tightening business should be over within 10-15mins.

Did you have any of the ally spacers missing from the gasket?

I cracked my sump too, but welded it up.

Alos snapped a bolt in the oil pump housing!! and yes I was using a torque wrench.

Phew, panic over. I managed to get hold of one today for nothing, which is now all fitted and seems to be okay- I'll check in the morning for any puddles of oil though.

With regard to torqueing up the sump bolts, I really took my time and went from 5NM per bolt all the way up to 13/14NM. I was preying as I did them up too. I was too scared to go for 15NM again.

The car feels awesomely fast this evening for some reason. Next job engine mounts!
