also the germans were the first to use superchargers competively on the mercs and they were two speed via a switch on the dash. year later the blower bentlys came along after being knocked up in a shed on some back street as bently didn't approve of the blower. these ones were either on or off again via a switch on the dash, made them more drivably apprently.
Yes the germans were first to use them. In them days the supercharger was stuck out in front of the car below the radiator. Couldn't miss it.

The german s/c cars beat the english N/A cars. (cause N/A is crap)

But then the Bentlys were fitted with s/c and beat the germans. (because german cars are crap) Yippy. :p

Jaguars are also production cars fitted with s/c. eg the XJR , XKR , and S type R

Supercharger.

I got both though :D
So have I.

Technically a Turbo is simply a turbine driven supercharger ( or turbosupercharger ), compared to a belt driven one. They are both blowers, just driven in a different way.

yes a supercharger can be made to switch on and off like in mad max but why would you want to? when off the engine is a low compression unit (think turbo compression and no turbo on it) also it costs a hell of a lot and is prone to breaking down as more bits are there to go wrong.
The one in my MR2 is driven via an electromagnetic clutch ( same as the ones on aircon pumps ), operated by the ECU. Off load the SC isn't driven, improving fuel consumption, but when you need the power the ECU engages the cluth, and away you go.....:)

^^^ and thats a good way to work a turbo and supercharged setup, disconnect the magnetic clutch when the turbo comes in, oh and you need a way to separate the feedsinto the engine too, saw one in ccc last month which used a butterfly controlled by a wiper motor and the magnetic clutch came from a flymo, genius!

but it wasnt a supercharged bently that won cos the s/c cars just raced each other on full boost until their engens blew and a n/a bently ended up winning,

theire has also been a 1.0 litre supercharged AND turbocharged nissan micra
