I was going to run a development engine for them a couple of years ago - not sure if it was low boost though, I doubt it with the amount of power it was going to make!!
Well, i dont know how the Vauxhall lump would work out with it done, but i am planning doing this to my Nissan 1.4 16v engine, Should make a big difference,
Should be very rapid, but i suppose it depends which bits you use (i.e size of turbo)
My Nissan with be running a T35 turbo!! which i have been told by a mechanic will give a massive increase in power/torque and fuel consumption!!
MIKE
The only thing im struggling with is finding a set of TBs for it, cant find anything yet!
yeah basically you would have to make a plenum chamber that covers all four inlets and has one large feed from the intercooler, saw this done on a escort, the guy that owns jamsport in northampton iirc
don´t will work good with small turbo config, because the small turbine will make a flow restrict in exhaust, and you will lost power. The advantage of TB, is that you can put more, and more mixture inside of chambers, you have the help of low restrict inlet, and the pressure of turbo, and in exhaust you don´t have any help for get out the "no-utility smoke", and don´t will have space for you put the a lot of mixture inside the chambers, because will be busy with the "no-utiliy smoke".. and when happen this, your engine stop power gain, and begin lost power..like you see in R.Road tests..
Good config for TBoed and turbo together, is a put a really big turbine, really nice exhaust manifold for the turbo, bigger exhaust valves, and the turbo only will begin operate around 4.500rpm or more... but the max power will be agressive and so high.
ok, so turboing TBs makes for lag
how about supercharging TBs?
for the plenum chamber, would this bolt onto a sausage filter back plate?
and thats how it seals?
I was using throttle bodies when I wanted to go injection for my turbo conversion to a XE. This was because it was the easiest way to do it as the std inlet manifold would not fit in my mini. Since running this I have found it easier to make my own inlet manifold which takes the idea of throttle bodies but retains one butterfly (from a cossie) and this produces a much better vaccum signal usually -21.4 where as before it would be about -12to-10. My ecu did allow the idle to run off the tps sensor pos but I was always playing about with it and you vac/boost signal with throttle bodies has to come from all 4 inlets and into a little chamber.
I would see velos they do a aftermarket manifold that would be ideal as they retain the std butterfly but much better flow.
iirc there was a 1.4 16v corsa in TV that was running a low boost turbo fitted by courtenays and that went well. Just wanted to take it a stage further and do what some people have done to the LET.
So why is it a good thing on the LET but not on the 1.4?? Is it all to do with size of turbo??
The small block XE would be a lovely engine to turbo. I was going to do Miles' one but he bottled it and went for TB's. lmao
Throttle bodies will not really gain much (if anything) on a turbo over a sorted inlet manifold. Don't think you'll get throttle bodied response off boost, theres a big fat restriction in the inlet and exhaust as well as a shed load of pipework and intercooler for air to pass through.
Use a Mantzel or equivilant and you're off to a great start on a 14/16XE. Turbo will go on with an adaptor between the standard 4-2 manifold if you want to save money. Oil return alu welded to the sump, oil feed off the pump. Coolant pipes are easy.
Expensive bits are management and pistons (the only real viable method to lower compression). But if you only want low boost a thicker head gasket may be ok. I wouldn't do it though from looking at the chamber design and the thickness needed to run some reasonable boost.
Alan at Velos has told me that blowing thru TB's isnt really to be recommended - it isnt a combination that works as well you might expect. For some reason pressuring air thru TB's causes problems that means you dont tend to see an advantage over more conventional set -ups?
Ultimatly the turbo could make much more power than the tb's. If you spend the right amount of cash on it.
