The XE is in the Cav and all wired up and turning over but I am getting no spark.
I have managed to source a 20XE coil with the right module from a motor that was running.
I am pretty confident I am getting fuel but I am not getting any spark.
I was wondering if there was a test I could do to see if its the coil thats faulty or if its the dizzy etc.
I also have a single wire left over. It comes from the engine bay loom (rather than the ECU loom) and is a single red (quite thick wire) with a round connector on the end that will slide down a bolt (like the ones that go on the battery terminal). I am pretty sure it didn't come off the battery terminal as I had not taken any of the others off. It has a "swinging radius" that means it could reach to the starter motor area but I am at a loss as to where it goes and whether or not it could prevent me from getting a spark.
I am by no means an XE wiring loom expert. But usually a terminal like that should go to the starter. Its probably of the back of the alt which in a lot of cars is where the ignition module/coil get a power feed.
to rule out the dizzy, pull the king lead out the middle of the cap, and fit a spark plug directly into the kinglead, and rest it on the block (earthing it) crank the engine.
How many wires should there be going to the starter motor. I have got 2 at the moment. The big one going the big thread and the small one going to the small thread. Should there be another one going to the small thread?
Andy this wire is on the car loom not the ECU loom. It comes form the same place as the wires that plug into the little black and yellow/ blue relays in that black plastic flip top box right next the near side strut top.
Have you checked the fuse? Might have gone pop with a voltage spike, stranger things have hapened. If the Leads touched the shell then it may have gone pop to, the ECU may have gone bang if the leads touched the shell as well.
THe ecu light shouldn't have been coming on before that big red wire was connected.
It should now. Is it ? If not check the fuel pump relay (and if necessary short all 3 big terminals togther and see if the ecu light now comes on and the sparkplugs spark. )

On my C20XE I removed from my Calibra, there were 2 thick red cables with eyelets on the end. One went to the starter motor (engine bay loom) and the other was from the back of the alternator (ECU loom).
Then there was a big thick BROWN cable which bolted to the NEG battery terminal. I always thought this was odd, having a brown cable to earth, as brown is live in home electrics. Why didn't GM have a black cable !?!!? Oh well, such is life.
But I'll doubel check that next week when I'm working on the car again.
hes moved onto bigger and better problems, the single wire was the rev counter feed, hooked up to a connector near the coil. The non starting was fuel feed and return on the wrong way.

seeing as your here rob, animal has a plentiful supply of KS heads down the lockup. We almost gave one a quick once over and bought it back with me as a gift today. They are there if needed anyway.
i was having a good look at a head, trying to work out where water could be breaching the hold, so to speak. Its possible, but we will see.
