I was looking at a old Max Power DVD "The Beasts unleashed", and there was a lad called Gary Taylor from Jersey, and he had a astra running 4x4, does anybody know any more about this sort of conversion or who i could contact. Cheers!

Keep trying Boy, we both know you sold the Rover because it was just too much car for you ;)

...in Scotland ;)
lol. It was a bit slower than the GTE in some situations, but mainly quicker, especially on the motorway.
Costs my friend, costs was why it went.

Anyway, I am looking forward to forced induction again soon. ;)

all you city boys are spoilt :) im lucky if i get straight road 20% of the time.
4x4 would be great for me as its nearly all B roads i drive on.
thats why my car is aways a mess :(

a 4x4 astra would be good but its a bit of a waste putting in an inferior 4x4 system that the cav/cally use

better off spinning the lump round and fitting a sierra 4x4 system :D

Theres also little point in having 4x4 after the start line where its just dead weight for the rest of the run

I have always thought about on a cav/cally 4*4 why not after the first part of a 1/4 mile run wire up a switch so the ecu thinks your breaking thus turning of the 4*4 system and not more drag.

Understand?

Oh but there is :)

  • It significantly Improves Handling
  • It means you can use maximum torque even when going round tight corners. (like a round about turn off) Dan might know what I mean
  • Make the steering more precise.
  • And if you can get wheel spin in 4th then you need it after the start!

Oh dear. Scotts doing the Quotes like Richie :p

Well strangely enough cars can be used in all sorts of conditions.

  • In the wet
  • In the dry
  • Drag Run 1/4
  • Race track
  • Road with corners and roundabouts
  • Straight roads
  • Ralleying on roads (organised and not organised)

A car that comes out best when you take all those conditions into account is a 4x4.

If you just got dry straight roads then yes a 2WD will be quicker but how likely is that ?

Yes very good :p

Just saying I thought he was refering only to Drag runs at that moment! Obviously in other conditions its a whole other kettle of fish. I'll stay out of this conversation lol. :D

In the wet the 4x4 would be faster.
Due to improvments in tyres and the introduction of silica, modern high performance tyres now offer similar wet performance as dry. Hence the advantage of 4x4 in wet is much reduced from what it was only a few years ago.

Where 4x4 wins is traction, eg powering hard out of corners, or coming of roundabouts. However for sweeping high speed corners where the car is maintaining speed, lateral grip is more important. My view is that 4x4 makes little or no difference for this type of corner.
