Done a track day today at Goodwood and now when at high rev's (Over 5k) it smokes a bit and when doing fast right handers as you straighten up you get a BIG ploom of smoke.

The engine runs and drives as normal but I have noticed it using more oil than normal.

There is no knocking or unusual sounds just the smoke described above.

Does it sould like the rings and how easy are they to do?

Will I need to do anything else?

sounds to me like a breathing problem...now what thats caused by is another thing :p
could be rings which would smoke at full throttle or could be oil starvation at the pickup pipe and then surging or it could be excess pressure in the block forcing all the oil out the top.

yah, right turns would make the oil surge up the the breather end. simpe checks would be to look for oil in the throttle body, and also take out the dipstick with the engine running, if you get a facefull of oil then we know for sure.

Maybe it was too much oil, mine did this after a put a weee too much in, maybe your rings are on the way out and parping round at 5k with too much oil overpressured them and it was smoking a bit then when ou went weee it went slosh and shed loads of smoke fell out the back.... :)

Was there anyone behind you when it happened?
When mine went I stopped traffic :D

How do I get my sump bafflled?
Is there anywhere that sells them?
Swindon RE sells new steel sumps which are all baffled & gated. A lot of the ralley boys use them cos they're not allowed to use dry sumps.

They do look real good and do the job nicely. Price - circa £300 IIRC.

If I ever get my finger out I'll draw what they've done.....

Also my local engineering place has done a few before. He's based in Burgess Hill (west sussex). I can give you the number if you're interested.

doing the breather mod will stop this... me and nova_turbo had loads of problems with this last year (anyone who came to the wales meet will remeber robs car smoking out about a mile of road with thick blue smoke)
yeah thats true, cause the oil will drop into the cam housing instead of whizzing through into the throttle body.

I have done the breather mod.

What about knocking up a catch tank and blocking off the pipe to the throttle body?

On the breater mod could I get away with removing all the plate except the bit where the 2 pipes exit the cover?

most people just use a pop bottle or something with holes jabbed in it. can buy alloy catch tanks at a premium. you just unplug the large pipe from the throttle body and whack that in your catch device. block the holes in the throttle body (short length of hose with bolt wound down the end) and block the small breather stub on the cam cover in he same way.
