It would appear you guys are in exacly the same fix I'm in, My Mk2 1.6 is now rust free, resprayed and generally sweet BUT it lacks a certain Red top'ed engine. I know my car is solid but a 16v GTE would come with all the goodies as standard.
This is a decision you're going to have to think long and hard over, I have and I'm still undecided:rolleyes:

Age is not relevant in a car older than 6 years.

Condition, condition, condition thats more important.
History, History, History thats even more important.

When I bought my M Reg Astra 1.4i LS (Non V Grill). It had a full service history and was a decent car. I also looked at a 1.6 N reg V grill Merit. There was no service history, and it seemed like it hadn't been serviced for a while (brakes were naff and it was very sluggish.
I also looked a an F Reg Nova GTE with 140 K miles on the clock. It was 1000 quid cheaper than the other 2 but had a full service history.
I should have bought the Nova but the mileage put me off.
But I am sure that the car I have is better than the newer one I could have had at the same price.

I have spent the last few months however wishing I had bought an Astra or Cav GSi but I'm going to gradually improve what I have over the next year or so - I've got some nice alloys with Brand new mitchelin tyres and next are GTE/GSI Brakes, and then Suspension (Shocks, Bushes and Maybe Lowering Springs.)
All mods will be justified on the basis of a Cost Benefit analyis. The Brakes for instance - I need new disks, and when the pads are due for replacement I will fit the new calipers also.
The Tyres on the 13 inch steel wheels needed replacing and I managed to get the wheels in loot for 10 quid. The Tyres I bought off a mates brother (he works for a tyre wholesaler - I got a receipt !) for 115 quid and the refurbishing of wheels was 100 quid including fitting and balancing of Tyres. Replacement of old tyres would have cost 120 quid at quick fit. So for 105 quid the car is totally transformed, wet and dry grip are so much better.
Would I ever fit a 16V gsi engine ? The engine has 85 K miles on it so it's unless I am stupid It should last another 4 years (20K pa) taking it to 165K - Would I do it then ? Depends on the condition of the rest of the car !

Which would have more value at the end of the day ? A GSI replica or a GSi ? Easy answer that one !

Incidently Mike Warner has a 1.8 GSi engine for sale !
