Engine running in

In just over a week I should hopefully get my car back with a full top end rebuild, what running in precautions should I take in this time. Obviously I know to take it easy for a bit but any formal recomendations?

because its only a top end rebuild there are no new bearings to run in, like the bottom end bearings.

i would however take it easy for the first 500 miles or so, slowly building the revs up as the miles increase in 100 mile segments starting with a limit of 3000rpm

all that you need to do it be careful so all the gaskets bed in properly, and that the oil seals are ok.

not a great believer in running in head gaskets TBH. been recommended to let it heat up and cool down a couple of times, that's it.

If you've fitted it properly, what difference does it make to it whether you do 100 miles or 1000 miles before thrashing it?

This may spark a great debate - but I've never had any head gasket running in problems (my head is off for a valve problem and fecked dizzy before anyone comments on that  )

If you have just had a simple head gasket and de-coke of the head then there are know running in problems at all.

How ever if you have had a complete head rebuild with cam(s) and so forth then care for the first 500 miles or so is advised, it`s always cheaper to err on the side of caution. After this time/milage period then be sure to use a good engine flush, run the engine at idle for about 20 - 30 minutes then drain oil, if the engine is an 8Valve use a semi synth oil if 16Valve then use fully synth oil, the vauxhall own fully synth is one of the best oil's on the market, i know this as i use it on a regular basis at the garage where i play with cars, my car personally runs better on this oil.

Hope this helps a little. :)
