What oil for a GTE 16v?

Hello,

My GTE has started to get a bit tappy recently. When I first got it it had been sitting for 8 months and when it was started then there was no tapping. It had an engine flush but I think it needs another one and a better quality oil. I'm thinking 10/40w Magnatec?

If using the Wynns...I always get good results by leaving the engine revving (when warmed up) at 2000rpm - 2500rpm for ten mins....then leaving it idling with the stuff in for another ten mins....then drain it...change filter...refill with fresh oil...

Can literally feel the difference when driving it after the oil change!

There's still two things that are bugging me with the GTE.

1) ICV - hopefully it's going up in the air on Sat so I can get the thing off and give it a good clean.....

2) Water leak - We cannot trace this bloody water leak at the moment! When the engine is running there is almost a steady stream of water (quick dripping) coming from the bottom of the cam belt cover. Obviously this might point to the water pump but I'm sure I saw a puddle of water sitting on a ledge(?) at the back of the engine away from the water pump?!?

If I had to get a new water pump and cambelt, how much does a local Vauxhall garage charge roughly?

It does sound like the water pump...although check the pipes that run behind the engine behind the block.....pipes can split there too which could also cause the same effect - although I reckon the pump is probably the main culprit!

Not sure how much Vauxhall want for job but Ive just had one done and cost £100.

If the water pump is leaking, it would be dropping water on the cam belt which would spray it in all directions. Don't leave a suspect water pump too long without checking. This is most likely the cause of the leak.

When it's in the air I will have a bloody good look! Water pump area easy to spot with the cam belt cover off?

Engine_Swap - let's just say I know someone in the trade:D I don't think I can get too much though, just the odd bottle I think. I'll find out.

I agree.....I know engines inside out but water pumps are a mare!!! getting them out can be mucho fun....split the block once losing my temper trying to get one out that had seized up solid in the block!!!!

Wish I could get FREE oil! *:)

I know loads of people in the trade but I cant get free oil *:)

Matt, the cambelt , water pump and rollers aren't that much of a pain, unless the pump has mated itself to the block. I would have got it all done in about 4 hours on my LET if I could have worked out how to use the tensioner properly, now I know, its a doddle.

If you have the space / workshop then I might be able to help you one evening if you wanted.

I know Matt worries and he would like the 1 year warrenty.

The reason its cheap is they have to take the cambelt off anyway so the price is really £185 for the waterpump and £35 for the cambelt.

Book it in man, you're loosing valuble summer days when you could be out grinning or pack hunting :p

Fair enough. Although not too put the wind up you but I think you would have a small fight on your hands to get them to take responsibility for it if it does go wrong.

The good thing is that this is bread and butter stuff for the guys down at Vaux and should be fine.

Piece if mind can be an expensive thing.

Savage - My reply didn't sound sarcastic did it?

It reads funny to me for some reason. Thank you very much for offering to do the work. I've got 110% faith that there would of been no problems etc. As Cemesis said 'I am a worrier'

Sorry Matt, I didn't mean to come across in a huff.

I completely understand about wanting to get a warrenty with the work. I would have done the same thing if I had of trusted my VX people. The other thing that made me do it myself is I had a mate give me advice when I needed it. He used to work in the VX garage for years as mechanic, so I had confidence that it would be ok. Bugger, now where's that wood - I think I need to touch some ;) .

Once again, apologies for coming across rude, I didn't mean to.

 :)
