http://www.migweb.co.uk/gallery/data/500/45astravxr.jpgRivals might still be reeling after catching sight of the stunning new Astra Sport Hatch, but Vauxhall has another blow in store – the red-hot HPC show car. With jaw-dropping looks and a massive 240bhp, the three-door Astra promises to hit competitors right between the GTIs at the Mondial de l’Automobile this week.

Set to be unveiled alongside the new Sport Hatch and the innovative glass-roofed Panorama at the show later this week, the HPC gives a taster of the performance version of the Astra, due in the UK next summer. And it’s not just the styling which promises to have enthusiastic drivers drooling – with 240bhp and 310Nm of torque from a 2-litre turbo engine, the Astra is said to have a top speed of around 150mph and a
0-60mph time of less than 6.5 seconds.

Using a modified version of the 2-litre turbo engine from the VXR220 roadster, the HPC’s engine output is increased by modifications to the intake and exhaust systems. To handle the power, the car uses the advanced IDSPlus electronic chassis control and a six-speed manual gearbox linked to dramatic-looking 19-inch wheels.

Building on the exciting style of the standard Astra, the HPC features a wider and lower air intake, a new honeycomb grille and deeper front spoiler. Extended side sills, profiled towards the rear, lead to a sculpted rear bumper that incorporates a supercar-style diffuser. This directs airflow and, along with a new roof spoiler, keeps the Astra planted on the ground at high speed.

Eye-catching details are also found in the interior, with the Recaro seats and leather trim details colour matched to the exterior paint. New instruments and a piano-black finish to the centre console also differentiate the HPC from other Astras in the range.

It’s expected the Astra VXR will hit British showrooms next summer, but for hot hatch fans who can’t wait that long, Vauxhall has just introduced a new Astra 5-door SRi powered by a 200bhp version of the HPC’s 2-litre turbo engine. Available now priced at just £18,145, the SRi’s standard exterior styling pack and 18-inch wheels mean it too has plenty to excite drivers while making the competition look overpriced and underpowered.

does look good but sounds like it won't be very tunable, they probably have nearly all they can out of it already

the VAG engines (1.8t) will produce about the same power when chipped with intercooler upgrade and bigger pipes and exhaust, tbh i can't wait for the 2.0 fsi turbo for the new VAG's. that should be a good engine

is it still FWD ?

or they gona rwd/4x4

and is it running the cav/cally turbo box ?

THey are producing the two door with an optional windscreen that goes about a foot into the roof. Look good tbh. The car is still FWD and it is a new 6 speed gearbox - as used in teh current Vectra Turbos

I thinkth not... the cally 2.0 turbo can go up to about 370bhp... (I think)... so although the astra's power figures are pretty stinkingly high I do believe it could top 350bhp... any opinions?

They had pictures in last weeks autocar. The figures claimed were 6.1sec 0-60mph and 155mph top speed which would make it the fastest hot hatch and i think fastest production front wheel drive car ever. They don't think they are going to keep that wheel design, a five spoke wheel is most likely but still talking 19inches with 235 rubber! I think possilbly 19's are too big and no doubt very expensive feeding the car new front tyres every time they get chewed up. Very nice car and i think that could be replacing my current Gsi turbo. The daft looking panaramic windscreen/sunroof is only an option, luckily enough.

shame about putting all that power thru the front wheels :(

yeah yeah looks nice but it seems to stand a little bit too high up for my liking. How the feck would you slam it if the wheels are that big already would there be any space to get it a little lower ??? :confused

Yes but the thing is that the cally uses an LET engine, which is naturally a lot more powerful then the new vaux turbo engines. This sort of suggests that they were more tunable to start with, I mean look at the astra coupe 197bhp as opposed to the callys 200+. I think that andypandypoos is right in saying that vaux have probably already tuned the nuts off of the engine, I think if you got it to over 300bhp it would have a very short lifespan. But who cares it looks the nuts until now the cally and the astra coupe were the best looking vaux's imo but now the Monaro and this new astra are at the top of my wish list.

370bhp is all thats available off the shelf for the C20LET, but theres loads more potential. Seem to remember a cally turbo running between 500-600bhp in car and car conversions before. The phase kits available for the Z20LET engine hardly touch the inside of the engine, running 270bhp and 320ftlbs @ 1.1 bar of boost. In todays tuning standard thats not much boost.
With cams, head polishing, forged pistons, ARP bolts, big turbo etc, 400bhp is reachable i think :D .
The reasoning behind 240bhp is to give good enough power but something reliable that they can offer a warranty on without sweating.

The difference between the 2 on performance is hardly noticeable. Astra quoted to do 0-60 in under 6.5 secs, alfa in 6.3. Astra quoted to do top speed of around 150, Alfa will do 153.
Saying that, I've heard the price of the Astra is going to be around £20,000 mark, whereas the alfa costs £22,750. Thats an expensive .2 of a second to 60 and 3mph extra top end @ £2750.
Also the Alfa is powered by an NA V6 engine which is going to be far more expensive to extract extra power from than the Z20LET is.
