Making large holes in the engine bay....

I've got the passenger side front engine mount on, and the front bolt is done up, but i cant get a spanner to stop the rear bolt from spinning when doing it up. (for those of you that didnt read my other thread, i snapped off the captive nuts because it was rusted solid, and theres no way of reusing them).

Having a look under there, i noticed a small square hole on the other side of that pic, where the wheel arch side is.

Would there be a problem with enlarging the hole say by and inch so i can get the spanner in there?

Enlarging the hole by that little wouldnt make much difference to the chassis structure would it?

Could you not grind the head off the bolt and remove the remains through the hole?

Or get a welder to spot the nut to the chassis?
Trevor, thats what I did mate. Im using new nuts and bolts with the new mount.

The captive nuts that were on there are now fubar'd, so couldnt use them even if i wanted to.

It all would have been simple if Vauxhall had put a little access hole next to the bolt rather than an 1nch away from it, as its just to small to get a spanner in there, as your at the wrong angle.

On the other side there is a square hole. What im after doing it to enlarge this by a small amount, just enough to get a spanner in it (so maybe enlarging by an inch max).

Is this alright to do? I mean such small amount wouldnt cause any problems with the chassis would it?

No cannot see it being a problem.

Cool, cheers mate.

Tis so annoying not being able to drive the car for like 3 days

Oh out of interest, the rear engine mount, is that help on by captive nuts?

I thought i saw a normal nut/bolt setup on one side, but i couldnt see the other side?

The rear mount is held on by two bolts through the floor and a long bolt and nut through the middle. If you ever have to change the rear mount, buy a spare of the long middle bolt as it corrodes in and it is easiest just to cut it out.
So its almost a dead cert that it will be rusted to buggery?

I've got the new rear mount all ready and waiting to go on. The reason im mincing, is I havent driven the car now for 3 days due to the rusted bolts on the captive nut mount, and its an arse walking to work all the time :D

Instead of me thinking ill do it in 20 mins tonight when i get back from work, should i just get the front mount done up so i can drive the car, and then replace the rear mount at the weekend when ive got more time?

Don't/Can't have the car out of action for any more time this week!

P.S., Is the bolt that goes through it a specific bolt? Do i need to get it from Vauxhall etc?

i did my rear mount in about 1/2 hour no probs with rusted bolts or anything, i should really replace all the bolts as its about the 3rd time ive undone the mount bolts.

think its helps that under the car has a good layer of engine/geabox/power steering oild to keep everything rust free.

infortunately it didnt solve my problem so the from mounts are next.

Hmmmmmmmmm maybe i might have a go tonight then :D Can i get the bolt from vauxhall?

Is it bolted on to the floor with normal nuts and bolts, or does it use captive nuts?

The drivers front mount is a pieice of ****, the passenger one uses captive nuts which rusted to buggery on mine, but my dads new Dremel soon sorted that out :D
