ideally you balance the whole rotating mass, rods, pistons, crank, pulleys, clutch and flywheel, but its not a job for the home mechanic, they do it by removing mass by drilling holes
We only did the flywheel at this moment, because then you don't have to take the complete engine apart. And you don't have to spend big money in one time.
But drilling holes in the flywheel is the way to go.
The pressureplate is always untouched?
Find a balancing shop via Yellow pages or an engine rebuilding place. They will balance the flywheel on it's own and the clutch on it's own and then the whole assembly, normally labelling the bolts. Really the flywheel should be dowelled so it accurately locates on the flywheel, otherwise the balancing is slightly wasted due to the clutch being off centre.
i was told by a mate that has done a few flywheels that there oviously balanced from new so spin them up on a lathe and take an equal amount off all round keeping them balanced your just thining the metal then. he did myn it was slightly out but not bad at all.
you dont want it to be slightly out at all!!
I would suggest get it professionally balanced by someone like hiflowheads.
The advantages of making components balanced/lightened is pretty simple, it will make the engine slightly more responsive and a bit more revvy. But doing jsut the flywheel isnt going to make much difference at all, as was said by region17
rods and pistons are not part of the rotating mass (they are reciprocating mass) so they dont get balanced at the same time...they can just be balanced to each other weight wise...eg...big ends and small ends all equal to one another.
lightening the flywheel does not increase horsepower...it increases accelerated horsepower ie...can spin up quicker, but the disadvantages are that it will make drivability poorer....cos the flywheel keeps the engine running smooth when u take your foot off throttle. with a lightened one there will be a much more noticable engine braking effect, which i thik would get annoyin if your in traffic most of the time.
How much have you taken off of the flywheel, is it the standard one. If so you can only take off a kilo or so, as it is quiet possible for it to shatter
