I've been having trouble a few times selecting 5th gear in my MK3 Astra GSI, it started doing this back in Feb, so went in the garage and they adjusted some cable and topped up the gearbox oil, all was fine till Monday morning when the problem came back, but now with a added problem. I had to come to a stop and put it in what I thought was 1st but was infact reverse, even though I have a lift collar for reverse.
It is a intermiting problem and can be a dangerious one in lots of was. This time the garage adjusted the clutch, but could find NO other problems  , it drove ok tonight, but when I pulled up on my drive and went through the gears it wouldn't go in 5th, and when in neutral the gear stick leans over to the right and will not go in 1st again, I can only get round this by putting it in reverse, so its like i'm re-setting all the teeth in the gearbox to line up again  :( , I am very very stuck and so it seems are the vauxhall dealers on whats the problem, so I'm asking anyone on here if they could help me out, and any ideas what they think the problem could be, Thanks very much people,

Regards
Darren.

Could be the selector rod out of line.

You`ll need a couple 4.5mm drill bits.

On the back of the selector housing (where u top the oil up) theres a little plastic bung at the back. Remove this put the & loosen the bolt that secure the linkage to the rod coming through the bulkhead.

Insert the drill bit in the hole u removed the bung from & move the linkage about & the drill bit should engage with the selector. No go inside the car & remove the gear stick gaitor, there should be a hole near the top of the plastic part under the knob, insert the 2nd drill bit through this 7 the hole beneath.

No re-tighten the bolt near the bulkhead & remove drill bits & re-insert bung.

Hopefully that may cure the problem (it did on mine)
