No power when accelerating

Hi,

I have a Cavalier 2.0l Sri with Ecotech engine and wonder if anyone can help me with the following problem.

When I accelerate the engine revs and it takes a couple of seconds before the car actually speeds up. This is very noticable from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th.

I thought it was the accelerator cable and so removed it and cleaned it out with de-greaser, some rubbish did come out but no real difference was noticed.

I realise that the Ecotech engine is not the best one to have but I would expect more response than what I have now.

Any ideas would be useful.

It hasn't been serviced for a couple of years. I picked it up 2nd hand this year and haven't managed to change plugs/leads yet.

It struck me that the problem probably lay elsewhere but if a change of plugs/leads/etc. will give me more response then I'm happy to do that.

Clutch slipping surely??
try handbrake on, put it in gear.
let the clutch pedal up slowly and increase revs.
If the revs fly up then clutch is prolly worn, if the car stalls then clutch is ok methinks?

I think it's a bit beyond my capabilities but I do have a local mechanic that has a good hourly rate so he'll be doing the work.

It's just the cost of parts really trying figure out whether I have to take a 2nd mortgage to get the bits.
