Insurance for a driver who's not owned a car for seven years

For one reason and another I want to buy a skint mate a car and insure it. He last owned a pug 205 1.9 back in '04 but hasn't owned a car since selling that one, and I would guess doesn't have NCD. I can't ask, as then the gift of the car will be refused.

Question is, he's 37, has no claims or convictions and about 5 years of NCD when they lapsed, but I'm hearing numbers like £1K to cover a poxy mondeo or other similarly cheap yet reasonably reliable vehicle. (Let's not get into whether or not a mondeo is reliable or not).

Anyone got any tips on which insurers to try for this scenario?

Try all the price comparison sites and call the top 3 insurers directly, then all the usual cheap companies like Adrian Flux, HIC, Chris Knott (cheapest for me but bastards for claims) and the rest

Yeah I spend ages typing all my info into all 3 comparison sites then press send at the same time and see what I get.

What a nice friend you are by the way I wish someone did this for me !
