Hi all, slightly confused, wired up all my system today and dont think it sounds right. One amp is running set of front components and set of rear 6x9s, i know the amp should be set on high pass for both sets of speakers but what should the hertz settings be,they go from 40hz to 400hz. Second part is about my subs,i run 2 twelve in kicker subs in a sealed enclosure and have just stripped the box of its carpet and subs in order to recover it,i noticed inside the box there is a bit of wood that separates the inside and splits it into 2 compartments,so i silconed all around the edges of inside box,not sure if this is a baffle,i am running the subs bridged, and need to know if you can run one sub posi to posi and negi to negi and the other sub, posi to negi and negi to posi, dont know if this is called running them in phase, and also need to know what the hertz settings are for the subs,as i presume they will be lower than my other speakers and on my alpine head-unit there are hertz settings to,think they go from 40hz to 100hz,any help would be grateful, sorry this is so long,cheers.....................Davie
Hmm....You want to set your high-pass filter to about 50hz. Any lower wont help your smaller speakers do much. If you can set them separately, set the 6x9s slightly lower than the front components as these are a bit bigger.
I have pretty much the same setup in my subbox. While not essential, it is probably best to completely seal the speaker chambers off from each other. This way they can't interfere with each other. Also, while you have the box open you should line the inside with about 1" thick sound damping material. This looks like loft insulation.
Wiring bridged amps varies from make to make. Some are + from one side and - from the other. It depends on the switching in the amp. You COULD wire the subs up in parallel (i.e. BOTH positives to the pos on the amp, likewise withe the negatives.) This will present the amp with a 2ohm load thus making it produce more watts. Be very careful of doing this with a bridged amp as it MIGHT overload it...
If you wire your subs as you described (one + to + and one + to -) they will be out of phase! This means that when one sub sooks in, the other blows out, thus cancelling each others waves out! You want to make sure they are both wired EXACTLY THE SAME WAY so that they work together, not against each other.
Also you should set the high-pass filter for 12" subs at about 80-100hz. It dosent necessarily matter if they overlap the other speakers slightly, this will depend on the crossover slope on the amp, i.e. how quickly the sound fades out above the cutoff level. This is all part of tuning the system... Have fun!
sorry about the delay in replying, had a wee go and sussed it out slightly, got it all up and running but still got some tinkering about to do to get it right,i run 2 rto 4 channel amps, pair of mb quartz components, set of kenwood 6x9s and 2 twelve in kicker impulse subs in sealed enclosure full boot is boxed and covered in red fleece(nicer and cheaper than cloth)have also ran 8 purple l.e.ds above subs for show purposes as i will be entering some competitions this year, this all runs on 4 gauge earth and power cable, with amp 1 running subs bridged and amp 2 running 6x9s and front components and l.e.ds only working when boot is open, have posted some pictures in gallery, think its now in page three,as for your comment about setting hi pass filter,i was always under the impression you ran it on low pass for subs, but might be wrong, think i have spoken to you at rs owners club at strathy last june i was there with a guy from motorsound in glasgow and will be going up again this year once again thanks for your comments and for your help...........Davie
think its on 12 june but not possitive, when i find out i will pm you, also found out today that my m8 had messed with the crossovers on my amp and was only running one sub,so set crossover to low pass and seems to have done the trick......Davie
