Hi all,
I’ve had a search around various forums and the web but can’t seem to find a solution to the problem I am encountering.
I recently bought an Astra 05 plate. The stereo which come as standard with the Astra (CD30) had an issue (probably due to too many code entries with the previous owner and therefore locking) and kept on showing “Display Safe” rather than the radio station or CD track number. After realising this was going to be difficult and perhaps costly to sort out (finding the right garage, getting the stereo code, re-programming via Tech2 etc) I decided to get a new car stereo which had some more advanced features.
I bought a SonyBT3900U and the necessary Sony
Steering Wheel Stalk Adaptor for a Vauxhall Astra. I also had to buy an adaptor to change this area connector to the larger aerial type (see photos).
I’ve got the stereo up and running and works really well with CDs and my iPod with a good clear sound.
However, there are two slight niggles, the first being of particular concern!
1. The radio signal is pretty bad. With the standard manufacturer stereo I used to have some areas where I couldn’t pick up a signal but in general the signal was good. On the new Sony stereo the AM band signal is a bit of a joke, the FM a bit better but still not as good as the standard Astra CD30. My car has one of those ‘bee sting’ aerials situated on the rear of the car.
a. I have read some information about connecting power to the aerial, but I can’t see how I would do this with the Sony stereo.
b. I have also read about signal boosters, do they work and will I have the same issue connecting the power?
c. I’m sure I read somewhere that not having a good earth connection could cause interference, but I’m not sure how this would be the case as the previous radio had reasonably good reception and I haven’t done any ‘real’ wiring apart from plugging in the ISO adapter cables.
Does anyone know the solution to improve my radio signal?
2. Another issue is to do with the radio power. I originally had the red connection going into red and yellow into yellow (as seen in the photos I took). This originally worked absolutely fine and switched on with the car ignition and off when I took out the key. However shortly after I took the photos I replacing the stereo unit and I couldn’t get the stereo to switch on! So, I connected both red and yellow into the yellow double cable socket and now it stays on. I have modified the on board radio setting to turn off after 30 seconds of inactivity, but I would prefer to have it simply switch off with the ignition.
Can anyone help here?
Many thanks!!!
Phil.
