new cd player help needed please...

ok so the standard stereo has to come out as it is in safe mode! so i have a sony cd flip head unit, now 2 things one major one not here goes:

1. major= when i plug the wires in to the loom of the car i switch the red and yellow wires thats fine, but that only allows enough power to allow the front to flip? there is no sound and no screen??? am i being really dumb? now when i connect all 4 wires togeather = 2 red 2 yellow i get sound and disply works but it wont turn off?? its doing my head in lol some one help....

2. minor= i have just bought a steering wheel with stereo controles how do i or what do i need to make these work if i get the stereo working ??

Not sure on the first one mate but you can buy the adapters needed to make the steering wheel controls work from Halfords or on ebay and they are pretty easy to find.
