    carputery headunit info wanted

I had my stereo removed by some kind chaps yesterday morning, so want to replace it with something as its a bit dull in there lol.

I dont need epic sound quality/millions of speakers etc but I do want to be able to load a stack of MP3's in, play CD's, obviously RDS radio and if possible integrate DAB in there too.

And with a tiny display that can be kept somewhere subtle, and a fairly simple interface.

Is there anyway of doing this with a carputer style setup?

Any particular reason for a carputer setup? There's a load of decent headunits out there that will do all that.

with a carputer its simple, best thing to look at these days is one of the dual core atom based mini itx boards, about 1-2gb ram, a decent harddrive that can handle knocks while on the move (or put it on rubber grommets to help with the vibration, and a M2-ATX 12v dc-dc power supply, also put it somewhere with plenty of airflow to help aid cooling, as for a screen ive heard a lot of good reviews on a lilliput 7" touchscreen, u wont need anything like vista so win xp is best and then you will need a front end like roadrunner (?) once set up you can add a usb GPS reciever for sat nav, usb bluetooth for making and recieving calls, the list goes on and on.

if building your on car pc seems a bit to much you can buy one fully built from a few places, google for "voombox car pc"
