Re: would this amp power my subs?

Firstly, the subs....

The Aidiobahn range are widely regarded to be 75% show & 25% go, I would advise you try to avoid giving them anywhere near their rated input power....With regards actual output I think they give a rich deep punchy sound rather than loads of wobble, in well designed enclosures they sound quite nice....

Now the Amp....

Being politically correct I would have to simply say, "You get what you pay for"....But I can honestly say I wouldn't use one if it were free in my 'Sugar Puffs'.....

Tested the 3kw mono back to back against a JBL GTO 1201, the JBL kicked its ass and was cheaper to buy....The 1201 is currently still in use, the 3kw one melted after only a few weeks, warranty claim was refused due to it being fitted by a novice, (so no guarantee it was wired up correctly lol).....

Amp we tested and melted

Do you have a budget???

Will you be playing just music??? Or will you occasionally play the odd 0dB tone to impress your mates???

Re: would this amp power my subs?

I would go with the JBL GTO 14001e....

I've used 4 of these now & they seem to perform quite well....

I would advise 0awg power from battery to boot if your ever going to run it into 2ohm though, with you running into 4ohm on music, 4awg should just about cope, (although I would tend to future proof & fit 0awg anyway).....

This amp will get those Audiobahns singing, but introduce clip and it will singe the coils quite quickly, (as will almost any amp).....so be cautious with the gain control....

Re: would this amp power my subs?

i have 4 guage wiring at the moment i think it will be running 4 ohm but because its got dual lug terminals the subs are awkward to wire up. i get paid friday so i shall go for the jbl gto 14001e. but i dont want to get carried away with the bass because my car being a e36 it is quite hard to get good bass out of it. what else could you recommend?

With regards what mate???

General installation???

Wiring???

Sound Deadening???

Sub Aiming/positioning???

Front Components???

Check out the 'Sticky' titled "A few audio questions answered" for some basic info.....

Your subs are 4ohm dvc so can be wired to show the amp either 4ohm or 1ohm overall....The GTO 14001e is NOT 1ohm stable so you should wire your subs like this....

Any more info required post away mate, someone will always offer advice.....

Re: would this amp power my subs?

With regards sub aiming/positioning;

Avoid having them firing across the boot or directly at each other.....I would have them firing either directly to the front or directly to the rear......( I would expect directly toward the rear would yield best results).....

Bass transference into the cabin is always an issue with the E36, If possible remove any shelf mounted rear speakers, heavily deaden all the boot, (pay particular attention to the boot lid and rear panel)......

With regards front components;

Installation is the key, mount the mids on MDF baffles, deaden both the inner & outer door skins and effectively seal all access holes in the process, (take care not to foul any electrical motors, moving parts or control rods), a door deadened in this manner will allow the mid to reproduce a fair helping of punchy mid-bass which will vastly improve overall quality and warmth.....

Try to select a set of components that have 'silk dome' tweeters, these tend to have a much softer top end, nothing worse than a harsh front end.....

Coustic Compressor components when installed in the above fashion give fantastic results, if these aren't to your taste then how about Rainbow 265 Deluxe components that are slightly dearer.....

With regards wiring the subs;

Each sub is dual 4ohm, so with both coils wired in 'parallel' it would present an overall 2ohm load.....

Both subs show a 2ohm load, so with each sub wired in 'series' it would then present an overall 4ohm load....

The picture in my previous post shows this.....

When you get the JBL GTO 14001e amp you will notice it has two sets of speaker output terminals, these are connected in 'parallel' inside the amp to facilitate easy connection of multiple subs.....

If you wire the subs as above, then simply use one pair of terminals on the amp, (don't bridge the amp or connect one sub to each pair)......

You could if you wish wire each subs coils in series making each sub present an overall 8ohm load, like this....

Then simply connect both subs using both sets of terminals on the amp, (as you would if fitting two single coil subs)....This will present an overall 4ohm load to the amp.....

If your still not sure, let me know & I will do you a quick sketch.....

Think thats about it at the moment.....
