ripspeed dvd HU?

any one had one of these? a mate had one in his taxi a while back and sounded quite good with a SPLX sub/Amp and standard speakers (new ish VW passat estate), went loud as f**k but sound quality was awesome even in dvd mode.
im just wondering if it will sound as good with my setup,
Alpine type E's in front doors
JVC 6x9's in rear shelf
above running off a legacy amp
12" Active Juiced Sub

i will be sound deadening and enclosing the 6x9s when i re do it all, am just wondering if the power/signal quality from the head unit is good enough?
my current head unit is cr*p and sound quality just isnt really there, but am on a budget and would like a dvd hu, but think the ripspeed one is all ill be able to afford with a motorised screen...

any advice appreciated....

WallopSRI where r u???? lol

Make sure it's got a removable fascia as some of them don't. Which is silly.

Re: ripspeed dvd HU?

Mornin mate,

The Ripspeed units currently available cheap from Halfords are refurbished items....This doesn't mean they should be discounted from your choice, but a few stores don't advertise this fact....

Get onto the Halfords website and check them out, they have to disclose all relevant info on the site as its part of the advertising regs....

I know quite a few people who have used these and the Sevic items available from Motorworld, most have been very happy with them....Those that tend to be a little disapointed are the people who have owned a higher spec unit from the likes of Kenwood, Alpine or Pioneer.....

I'm almost sure Motorworld are currently running some form of audio sale which covers the Sevic units as well as some other brands, (Polk Audio, JBL subs, a few Kenwood subs & amps), which brings their prices inline with that of the Ripspeed units.....

If your after high quality, then thats going to cost money, if your simply after dvd playback thats more than good enough to watch then the lower priced units are fine....

Re: ripspeed dvd HU?

I have the 725 which came from online. Very good value and it's OK, sound is goodish, but the UI is pretty pants and playing MP3s on DVD/CDrom can be frustrating as it wont allow you to search, only skip. Also, random only seems to randomise thru the 1st 400 songs, and when you have 800 on a DVD thats gey. It also forgets that you have random selected when you turn the unit off and also occasionaly forgets what song you were listening to last. Radio has pretty pants reception and the AF function is as good as useless.

Other good points are the wealth of inputs and outputs allowing rear screen, seperate 'zones' (ie kids can watch a dvd on headphones on the rear screen while u listen and control the radio up front.)

My friend has the more recent 720 model and it seems better, but ive not had a chance to play with it properly so not sure what other bugs i could find!
