Good speakers

Just installed a really nice Sony headunit in my Corsa but still have the awful standard Vxl speakers - 6.5" in the front, 6x9s in the back. Obviously, next step is to replace them. Don't want a sub, too chavy. Sony unit's max output is 50w a channel (i.e. 200w). Would rather stick within that spec than get a new amp.

So what speakers do you guys recommend. Might just upgrade the fronts (6.5") first and would prefer to spend less than £100 if possible.

Recommendations?

Re: Good speakers

Thanks for the reply! I have bookmarked them!

What do you think of these http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/pro...s_id/5323.html ?

Also - my Corsa has tweeters already so are the tweeters supplied with component kits just a one-size-fits-all, in-place ugprade? Will I need any adapters?

They are a good set also (can't really go wrong with alpine) the tweeters should be the same size but probably won't fit in orginal space but should come with a few different types of mounting options.

Also if your head unit has built in crossovers you can have the tweeters running off the front channels and have the mids running off the rear channels but you will then need an amp to run the rear speakers, it will sound awesome though.

Caraudiosecurity are a good site but they generally are not the cheapest so have a good look round before buying.

Oh and stay away from infinity and jbl, the tweeters will give up in no time at all.

Re: Good speakers

oh right, think im going to change the complete front setup as its all jbl and i have never really been happy with it, infact if anything it was a down grade from the standard equipment.

Re: Good speakers

Awesome, thanks for all your helps guys. Yeah, have never had and never will have any JBL/Infiniti kit to be honest. I'm pretty sure my Sony Xplod headunit doesn't have the ability to route tweeters to rear channels and the rest to front so I'll stick with standard crossovers.

Reckon the sound would be OK if I bought those Alpines now and then upgraded the 6x9s in the back in a month or so when I have the money?

Also - the fact that the headunit supports maximum RMS per channel of 50w isn't going to be a problem with the 35w Alpine speakers is it? I don't tend to play my music at full-whack distortion levels, just want the best QUALITY I can get!

Sorry mate, Sony haven't made any 'really nice' head units for about a decade....even later Sony units with 24 bit Burr Brown DACS are naff....

How can subs be classed as 'chavy'.....

Now 6x9s, thats a different story, these are commonly referred to as chav by 9s.....

Sony claims 4 X 50w max, actual output in the real world is around 14w rms.....any brand claiming 4 x 50w or 4 x 60w are simply quoting big figures to grab a sale.....

A better choice if sticking with head unit power....

Active running with a Sony & no sub, very interesting.....

Oh crap, I've got Infinity tweeters, best try to sort replacements, (I've had them 4yrs so they must be ready for failing now).....

Two most common causes of tweeter failure;
1, too much power....
2, not enough experience....

Not quite correct, correct response would be;

totally different, but both Infinity & JBL are owned by Harmon Kardon....

Without knowing your level of installation I can't really offer any advice with regards improving your front end performance.....

NHS hearing tests are free I believe.....pop down and get one, then come have a listen to a correctly installed front end.....

As already stated you will be lucky to see 50w rms in total, let alone per channel.....

Every person has different tastes, its called being an individual.....I have expressed my opinions, (which won't tally with yours), in the last few threads.....For any person to blindly slate any particular make is bordering on stupidity.....

Until you actually grasp the basics of all the associated techno babble you should limit your advice to just that, advice.....

Pop along to local Halfords, take along a cd your familiar with, listen to a few different brands of speaker through a few different brands of head unit....once you decide which you prefer search on-line for best prices.....

There are a few brands which you will need to visit local car audio outlets to listen to, but its well worth the effort.....

SPL Dynamics----Nice warm sound
Rainbow----Get pretty loud with a nice blend of punch & vocals
DLS----My current favourite, strong mid bass coupled with silky smooth highs, (benefits of silk dome tweeters).....

But anyway, suppose I'm trying to say, listen to available advice, but always remember its your money, your choice.....

IF IT SOUNDS RIGHT TO YOU, THEN ITS RIGHT

I would suggest you READ THIS to arm yourself with a better basic understanding of whats what.....Or simply ignore me....

That comment directed at me???

Infinity & JBL share the same technology, they are after all owned by the same company.....

The tweeters are however different, motor structures are very similar, mounting options are also virtually identical, but the two sound totally different.....identical they are not....

But I'm a fair person, links supplied to both items, some will say 'identical' some will say 'similar'.....
