Head unit with USB connection around £100

A mate is looking for a new head unit. Must have USB input for memory stick and be around £100.

Any ideas?

Wouldn't go Sony mate, they sound awful....

Get your mate to pop down local Halfords and have a listen to a few different brands, then have a look on-line for better prices.....

"For any person to blindly slate any particular make is bordering on stupidity"

Sound familiar, hypocrite.

And the sound quality is very good, not quite as good as my old alpine but good enough for my so called deaf ears.

Doesn't matter what the full statement says you are "slating" sony which according to you is bordering on supidity.

Your taking the comment out of context....

Suggest you re-read the full post as it was first put down.....

You may well realise then that the comment was directed at everybody, (including me).....

Try to understand that my opinion stands for nothing.....I know it stands for nothing.....

Just because I don't rate a particular brand doesn't make it crap, it merely makes it unsuitable for me.....I know this & I was simply pointing out your opinion carries as much, or as little weight as mine.....

On average I tune or set up maybe 3 systems per week, these systems vary from simple active enclosures to full blown multi amp set ups, systems using Sony source units take by far the longest, and always end up being not quite right....

have a read of this, Sony vs Becker the Sony unit concerned was a CDX-GT929U .....Take note of comments directed toward Sony from others....

Tuned a van on Monday, system consisted of;

4ch amp driving front comps & 6x9s mounted in sealed enclosures in the back, (for open back car park disco playing)..
2 mono amps each driving a pair of 12" subs in ported enclosures
Sony head unit..... MEX-BT5100

System tuned using EMMA 2008/9 comp discs

Results-----Very poor....simply couldn't get it to sound right, 3 hours trying every trick in the book.....
Owner not happy, just kept saying the head unit was fantastic....

Sent owner to local Subway for grub,
Fitted spare Alpine CDA9855r I keep for such occasions....
system tuned using EMMA discs, (15mins)

Results-----Sweet,
Owner offered me 200quid for the Alpine, I declined......
Guy rang Wed to confirm he's ordered an Alpine 9855 & wants it tuned next Monday.....

But remember, if your happy with your Sony, great.....the above makes no difference to your opinion or feelings toward your unit.....

As I keep saying/typing

IF IT SOUNDS RIGHT TO YOU, THEN ITS RIGHT

Re: Head unit with USB connection around £100

^^woah, lads chill out

back on topic....ive just bought myself a Kenwood KDC W6537U from Helfrauds as they have a sale on at the moment. Anyways, it has a rear-mounted USB hub which will accept most mass-storage USB devices, iPod, Walkman etc....I picked it up for £89.99 and it is a noticable improvement on my previous SONY headunit.

Hope 2 help, Stevie

I too dislike the sound from SONY headunits, though most of their gear in general is pretty good (TV's & home hi-fi etc).

'XPLOD' is where it all went wrong IMO.

Give it a tacky badge, lower the price & quality to pocket money level. Winner.
