Unhappy Help needed! Not sure what sub to get.

    Hey,

I used to own an Audiobahn AW1200Q sub.

However a drunk friend of mine turned the system up far too loud and the voice coil has blown.

    I have a Sony XM-D1000P5 - Mono 1600w Amp

    RMS Power at 4 Ohms 500 W x 1
    RMS Power at 2 Ohms 900 W x 1

I now need a new sub. I have been looking at 15" Subs but I am unsure of what one to get.

I am willing to spend around £200 on a new 15" sub.

Please could someone help me as I am completey confused as to what subs will run best with my amp.

I have been looking at a Kicker Solobaric 15" L7 but im sure you guys can point me in the right direction.

    Many thanks,

    Gareth

Wat type of music do you listen to? Does it have to be a 15inch? Is the sub box ported or sealed?

I listen to a variety of music from rap to rock.

When I took my broken sub in to be checked I tested a 12 and 15 inch sub in my car and the 15" was much more impressive.

For that reason alone I want to get a 15inch.

My old sub was in a sealed box but I can choose what box I like for the new one.

To be honest the amp is not the best but either a alpine type r / re audio / kicker / vibe.
I think you would be better in a ported box mate.

With subs its personal preference mate .

Here is two links mate. I used to have type r subs very good subs mate

Thanks for the advice, The type r does look nice.

Whats the difference between a ported and sealed box other than the aesthetics?

Without going into much detail a sub that is in a ported box (with a vent that is tuned) will sound louder in effect. These enclosures are larger in size. One that is sealed will be quiter at certain frequencies but the quality may be better and the enclosure smaller. I personally would go with a ported box myself with a type r.

Remember to set up the amp correctly to mate gains / crossover etc

Ok so my amp can run a Dual 4-Ohm Subwoofer?

Im guessing its best for me to run it at 2 ohms then?

Yes mate if your amp is 2 ohm stable no problem. Basically if the 2 voice coils are 4 ohm and you wire them in parallel they become 2 ohm. As the amp will see this as a 2 ohm load it will give more power. Dont expect a massive increase in volume it wont make it twice as loud, but will give you a bit more head room. Next time you get the chance upgrade your amp though mate.

When you come to connect the sub and amp together make sure the amp is bridged correctly and the voice coils on the sub connected correctly, set the gain and crossover and your away

tbh i wouldn't risk driving an expensive sub with this amp, these amps are power hungry and if your charge circuit isn't up to the job you may well cause more coil damage. i would suggest opting for a twin sub approach.

say 2 JBL GTO 1502D's in a prefab dual sealed enclosure, these should give fairly good results and the subs are pretty robust,(you could even use 2 JBL GT4-15" subs if you could locate some).

just an idea though, maybe even two JBL GT-4 12" subs??? silly cheap at present http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BOX-OF-2-JBL-G...QQcmdZViewItem
if it sounds right to you, then its right.
