the same amp was used to run about 4 sets of components, all the others worked perfectly and 2 sets of them are still working now nearly 3 years on, the amp was set up perfectly but the speakers 'in my opinion' werent good enough. in the Infinity price range there are a few better sets of components that i would choose long before i went back to Infinity.

as for JBL, yes for the price there not bad. but you get what you pay for. i found them to give what i would call a 'dirty' sound as opposed to comps such as pioneer or the vibe ones ive just got. these give off crystal clear sounds right throughout the musical range, the bass isnt so deep as to wobble, and the treble isnt so high pitched as to hurt your ears. its as if the JBL's cant go quite as high or as low as other speakers. but i suppose thats the difference between £50 and £100.

the Alpines i just didnt like. there not a bad speaker and there currently in my gf's car (along with some JBL gear). i just didnt find the middle and low end clear enough but the high end noise to be very overpowering. this could probably be solved by moving the tweeter but with them in the std position i just didnt like them.

another BIG thing ive noticed - speakers that sound amazing on the stereo wall in Halfords dont usually sound that good in a car.

If you want ill show you mine to show you how much of a diffrence it makes.ive also got 6.5 inch infinity components in the front just like wallopsri has reccomended and 6x9s in the back so ill show you with the sub switched off to basically show you how much 6x9s are just not worth the money.at all.
I'll take you up on that al. Would like to here the speakers in the car before i make the purchase let me know when ye free and i'll pop round to see.

    rectangle 6x9s on parcel shelf
    Fli 400w x 4 channel amp
    CBR12 active sub

components give off a very nice sound, there quite bassy when they need to be but the tweeter gives a nice balance without being too top heavy (a problem ive found with some component sets, Alpine being a particular).

6x9s are VERY bassy for what they are, had the system running without these for a week then wired them in and the difference is amazing. would recommend these as a substitute for a sub BUT they are stupidly heavy !! also you wouldnt stand a chance of getting these near the front door of a gsi - far too big and far too deep !! they easily handle the power from the fli amp and i cant get them anywhere near full volume or make them distort because sitting in the car with these on is VERY painfull at high volume !! that said, turn the volume down and they add just the right amount of rear fill without pulling your ears into the back of the car because thats where the music is coming from.

the active sub is an amazing piece of bass producing kit !! ive not heard a 12" sub make noise like this before, certainly not straight out of the box anyway!! only downside i have noticed is it can be a bit slow to respond to a quick bass line. dance music makes it sound a little confused at times as its still making the 1st bass note as the 2nd kicks in. for R&B or rap tho its a fantastic piece of kit !!

im comparing this to the most recent systems ive had, in exactly the same car in exactly the same state; so its a pretty decent comparison. PERSONALLY i'd stay away from Alpine components as they produce a very disjointed sound, JBL certainly dont produce a quality sound, Sony are plain crap at making speakers, and the Infinity set i had lasted about 3 weeks before something blew in them so i wouldnt buy those again.
Thanks for the advice mate. Have to do some reading up i think Had really good feedback on the infinity comp's tho so not sure why yours only lasted few weeks. Thanks again gent's

wow!!!! go out for an evening and miss a full on debate

i was going to post up my opinions on some peoples comments, but, i have decided against it. tbh i can't be botheredlmao .

JBL equipment---possibly the best value for money at the moment,(TA regulars recommend the amps and subs all the time).http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=217388 http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=216745
Vibe equipment---does the job, prices are a little inflated imo,(you can buy better for the same money).
Alpine speakers---too much money,(high end gear is good).
Infinity comps---only heard good things about these,(apart from a guy who ran 4 sets from one amp and had a set fail? but the others are still running three years on ). correct installation is the key.
FLI amps---never used one so can't really comment. will post on TA shortly for a comparrison.

will post link to TA thread shortly
if it sounds right to you, then its right.

Also check out k and m acoustics mate they have plenty of display stands running all sorts and they aint pushy either.

I find halfords is a awful place to buy speakers to honest, when i first started messing round with ICE i thought it was great but about a year later i found talk audio and got alot of good advice from people like wallopsri. Then i went to k and m and realised how good things can sound in a car.

Over the years i have had many sets of speakers, subs amps etc so i cab give some feedback on most things mate.

link to corresponding thread on TA.

    just for the record, i think it only fair i supply a few links to items i have mentioned;

    Infinity KAPPA 65.7cs
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INFINITY-Kappa...QQcmdZViewItem

    or
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/INFINITY-KAPPA...QQcmdZViewItem

    JBL GTO 75.4
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JBL-GTO-75-4-4...QQcmdZViewItem

mount the kappa comps correctly,(with lots of sound deadening and as sealed as possible), set the amp gains correctly,(with the crossovers set at full/flat), and you should be quite surprised at the results.

due to 2ohm impedence of components you should have a potential 150watts rms per channel to play with, if using stock tweeter locations switch crossover to -3dB and aim them at each other, then adjust to meet your requirements.
if it sounds right to you, then its right.
