They lock them selves out after so many incorrect codes... are you positive your following the instructions to the letter? Got the ignition on while you doing it? (some need this iirc)

If you are then sounds like you need it unlocking.

They lock themselves for increasing amounts of time each time you get it wrong from 10 seconds up to a week or something daft but after only three attempts it should only be a few hours it's locked for i think so that's probably not the problem. if you got the car with the radio fitted from a garage try talking to them, they should be able to help.

if youve got the right code then you need the ignition on then turn the radio on and it will show safe followed by a row of empty spaces enter the code and then hold as on its own

some radios need ignition then power on then as then code then as again

That's because you now have to wait a while with both the ignition and stereo turned on until the security timeout has ended.

After the first two attempts, the waiting time is approx 10 seconds, After this, it increases to 10 minutes. With each further failed attempt after this the waiting time is doubled, reaching 640 minutes by the ninth attempt.

    ie,

    Attempt 1 - wait 10 secs.
    Attempt 2 - wait 10 secs.
    Attempt 3 - wait 10 mins.
    Attempt 4 - wait 20 mins.
    Attempt 5 - wait 40 mins.
    Attempt 6 - wait 80 mins. (1 hr 20 mins)
    Attempt 7 - wait 160 mins. (2 hrs 40 mins)
    Attempt 8 - wait 320 mins. (5 hrs 20 mins)
    Attempt 9 - wait 640 mins. (10 hrs 40 mins)

    Attempt 10 - landfill.

As you have 7 attempts remaining, (you're at the attempt 3 stage) all you have to do is wait 10 mins with both the stereo AND ignition left switched on. Once the display shows CODE you can have another go at putting in the code.

What model number is it? have you got the manual? if you have then it'll explain what you need to do in there, probably along with the words "consult your dealership" which roughly translates as "get your wallet out"

glad i got the manual for the radio now, as i've been stabbing at the buttons (just trying 1234 etc) and it's been stonewalling me lmao can get the right method out of there.

but .... how can i find out the code? it came without that info and never thought to contact the previous owners to get it, doubt they'd know any more. is there a standard one it would be if they never changed it?

this little problem completely skipped my mind when i disconnected the battery to work on the engine now i have no tunes, and more to the point, no traffic reports.

would it be more cost effective just to get hold of a like-for-like out of a scrapper with a known code and swap it, than going to the dealer for a code extraction?

Alternatively, is it difficult to just put another HU in? I've got a perfectly good Sony CR-5150 sitting in my cupboard gathering dust as I never got round to fleabaying it. Probably not much of an advance on the stock one in real terms but at least it works ... and has autoreverse

You'll need the model and serial No. from the radio label

Hmmm. Is there any kind of checksumming thing that can be used to figure it out at home? Seeing as I have the radio sat on my desk at the moment...
