Fitting 4" speakers into MK2 Astra dash.

I've bought some Pioneer top whack speakers to go.
I've just been out and removed the speaker grille. What's the easiest way to get the speakers out? Looks to me like I have to dismantle the dash.

I think you can undo the screws holding the speakers from the top, you may have to angle the screwdriver or use an offset one, then gently lever out the speaker. Feeding the speaker wires through is a whole different ball game. I'd suggest tieing a piece of string to one end of the wire then feed the string down through the hole and then pulling the speaker wire through.

Yep sorted it. One stubby screwdriver. And one electric screwdriver Phillips head in a mini socket adaptor.
Getting the new speaker in was OK.
Feeding the wires was OK, though I did a contortionist act lying on the seat with my feet in the air.

I've now got one old speaker on the left and one new Pioneer TS-? speaker on the right.

Only thing is....the Pioneer coaxial doesn't sound much better than the cheapo original one. I'm hoping that's because the head unit is crap (original Vauxhall badged Phillips Auto Peverse Cassete Player).

    Onto the 6 x 9s.
Would I better fitting those into the doors or rear cards rather than the parcel shelf?

id have got the head unit first mate. it would make the standard speakers sound a little better.

as for the 6x9's, get a stiffer shelf else they wont last long in the standard one.

You've got an antique there mate
As djadam said an upgrade to a better head unit would make a world of difference, Do I remember you saying about a Nakamichi (sp?) Head unit? Now thats some Audiophile grade equipment!

As for your 6x9's the pest position would be in the parcel shelf as it will give you better rear fill, In the rear door cards they would be mounted too low and sound muffled IMO. In the doors would be different I suppose, can't comment on the quality of the sound and fitting would be a nightmare unless you make yourself some custom pods so not to interfere with the window mech. etc.
    Good luck
    Joey.
