don't get a cheap head unit the best thing you can do is spend as much as possible on a good head unit. a decent head unit will have high and low pass fillters in so you tweak it and make even standard speakers sound fapin good. also get some 6'9's then save up some more to get a sub and amp. when you get an amp dont get a cheap one you can go for cheap ish speakers but not amp's and head units.

    cheers

cheers mate just the advice I was looking for I will buy a decent head unit and some speakers but one more question what make would you go for I was thinking sony cos I know they are quality and would you buy the same make speakers as the head unit or does it not really matter. I was told that if I put a new head unit in in stead of the original c d player thats in now I would lose the digital display thats in the car now where the time is I dont suppose its a big loss n e way if you want to hear quality tunes banging away. Cheers Orbital great help I get my gsi next month I am buying it off my parents for £3000 it is in mint condition with low mialage its a great car so as soon as I find the right stereo equipment I will buy it and get it fitted. Cheers Paulwillowuk.....lmao

I got a sony mdx-8500r head unit it's a mini disk one but they do a similar cd one and i'm very pleased with it sound quality is and has loads of fetures. It got a high and low pass fillter's built in, sub out, equaliser, some dso sound thing and loads of other stuff to play with. i also got infinity 6'9's a rocky 15" sub a kenwood amp and does not make any diffrece with all the diffrent makes mixed together. i have heard somewhere that there are aftermarket head units that will work with those diplays in the dash not sure witch ones.

halfords have a deal on just now think it was buy a package (head unit and changer) staring at £300 and get £20 off a pair 6x9's. you'd still get the free fitting on the pack.

so £200 left nowupgrade the front's to a good set of components £150 will do it and you'll need the adapter kit for the door speakers so no cutting needed (around £13)

so only £33 left now use that to get good 6x9s as your getting £20 off if you buy the cd changer pack

have fun with this as this will get you at least a 6 disc changer in there and some decent speakers
curiosity killed the cat...................but for a while i was a suspect!!

Paul, if you wanna keep your display i think you have to get kenwood. they are the only ones I know of that have the Vauxhall display feature. All new decent ones (above say £150 - £200) should have it. i've got a kenwoood tape with a CD slave unit and the sound quality is excellent. Only thing is, no sub output feature so have to mess with crossovers n s**t. not a cheap one either. BUT having said that, i would buy a kenwood again. You can't really go wrong with all the best known makes. Depends wot kind of look features you want!
