Mk2 astra false boot floor
Has anyone on here made one of these before??
if so any advice on making them?
I want to make one for my astra but looking at the boot its gonna be quite an awkward shape with the suspension turrets and the fact that the floor is not totally level..
i was going to make it in 2 halves, my main concern is getting the shape around the sides right...

yes i have made one the most difficult bit is making it flat. As for the shape it loks difficult but all you do is take te carpet out of your boot and draw around it
-
using the carpet as a template is a good idea, unfortunately one of the previous owners has replaced it and only cut it to a rough shape.. although as im going to re-carpet it i suppose i could ruin it to get the shapes of the turrets and then use it as a template...
how did you make your floor sit flat??
My friend made one for his Mk2 astra before i had mine and it was perfect. i was going to borrow it to copy the shape but he sold it about 2 weeks after i got my GTE..

i used little blocks at the corners to block it up. if you are doing the false floor because your putting ICE in the boot then what i did was to fill any gaps left between the boot floor and false floor with foam.
-
yes, i am making the false floor so i can mount my sub, amp and cd changer..
i take it the foam was to stoip vibration and to stiffen the whole build up...
hopefully I'll be making the template and cutting the wood to shape over the weekend then carpeting and fitting everything the following weekend..

its probably worth getting some sound deadener because you wouldn't belive how much sound and vibrations you lose through the spare wheel well
-
what something like dynamat?
Cheers for all the advice, i hadn't thought of half the stuff you've mentioned!
i've stopped the vibration from the numberplate, the spoiler and from the black vent things on the sides, is there anything else that is prone to vibration?
-
yeah dynomats the stuff. although its pretty expensive, what i did was layed in strips to make it go further buts its definitaly worth doing the spare wheel well i also did the rear 1/4's. one thing that i used to do my 306 front doors recently was underseal. i was suprised it worked quite well as its so thick. Its alot cheaper than dynomat. another thing you could try instead of dynomat is the soundener that bodyshops use . its not as good as dynomat but im sure it does the trick. I have also heard of people using expanding foam.

Cutting around a boot carpet would be you best bet, failing that get yourself a large piece of paper and draw round the edges.
I've got a few cans of expanding foam that I'm gonna be using on my Opel, Reduces the noise and is v.light weight
Brown Bread Sounds Dead is a good budget sound deadener, like dynamat but a bit heavier and without the "Brand name".
If your going all out on vibration reduction remember the roof, put a strip of dynamat it as there is little to none on it.

Boot Floor
========
get a thick sheet of carboard (like from a box in asdas or something). place this on the boot floor and just cut the cardboard until its the shape of your floor and fits snugly. you have your template.
Sound deadening
=============
Go to B&Q, go to the roofin department, buy flashing tape. 'bout £25 for 50cm x 10meters. same stuff as dynamat. not as thick but for that price you can double it up if you want. (dynamat is about £20 for 50cm x 1meter!)
