    Just an idea.....

I've been planning a very simple "MDF in the boot" jobbie on my nova. Nothing special just shelf with 6x9s, solid floor and side walls to tidy it up. Basically i can't afford to buy a descent sub and amp!

Anyway, been thinking, if I make the side walls out of descent thinkness and mount the 6x9s either side fancing inwards, would the space behind create a bass box effect? would it need a port? would sound be any good? I was then gonna mount tweets near the seatbelt mountings on the shelf.

    What do ya think folks?

6X9's don't usually need boxing in. But you will get an increase in bass by doing this. I wouldn't bother with porting as this will boost a specific frequency and then you get all the hassle of tuning the port/ box size to boost the sound around that frequency.
Personally I would NEVER put tweeters in the back, these will pull the sound to the rear of the car. You want the sound to come from the front. You wouldn't go to a concert and turn your back to he stage, would you? The best positioning is to shut your eyes and "see" the sound coming from the middle of the windscreen.

So u saying go with the 6x9 idea, scrap the tweeters and have say components up front?

Also by putting the 6x9s there they aren't on the shelves and open to ogling!

Can u recommend any good components?
Reasonably priced that is! I'm on tight budget!

If you wanna get a nice bass sound coming from your 6x9s then I suggest buying a Stealth Shelf from Auto Acoustics. A Pre-Trimmed one with the 6x9 holes already cut out costs about £110 incl carriage.

I ordered one and it sounds great. I got 2 sets of 6x9s mounted on them, as well as a sub in the boot. Great sound. It gives great concert hall performance as well.

Be warned though, it weighs a bit (especially with 4 6x9 speakers mounted on and a 10 disc cd changer), so the boot might need a bit of help when opening it.

Forgot to mention that the speakers are mounted under the shelf on the MDF, thus making them invincible to passers by, which is all the worth while when you got a few hundred quids worth of equipment in there.

Ill take some pics and upload a little later if you want.

You can buy accousticly (spelling?) invisible material to cover a shelf with so you could make your own.

Most 6x9's are "infinite baffle". Which means that the area behind the speaker can be huge. Or infinite suprisingly
And putting them in a sealed enclosure can limit how well they work and might limit the bass they produce.
You can buy a book on speaker enclosures. Gives you all the sizes of boxes and volumes and port lengths you need for different types of speaker.

I think the books called "designing speaker enclosures".
    I have become comfortably numb....
